Andersonville vs. Edgewater

Hey everyone! DH and I live in the suburbs and have been seriously thinking about moving to the 'city.'  Before, I loved the comotion and city life of Fulton River District, Gold Coast, and other area around there.  After watching a recent House Hunters in Andersonville, I realized you could get a lot more for your money there.  Does anyone live here or know much about these 2 areas?  Do you still feel you live in the 'city'?? We don't have kids and most likely won't for 5 or so more years.  We are looking to move to a fun area with plenty odf shopping, restaurants, social area!!!!
TIA!

Re: Andersonville vs. Edgewater

  • i adore Andersonville.   Very cute.  Lots of restaurants, bars, shops, people out and about, etc.   We'd probably move there if it wasn't for the commute.. we just can't give up our 10 minute trips to work just yet.   I think it still feels very "city" up there, but not in the same way as living close to or around downtown/river north/gold coast, etc.

and just be careful with edgewater.  some places are better than others, and the not so good places should be avoided if you are going to be walking a lot alone at night.

  • My friend lives in Andersonville and loves it.  In fact, I don't know anyone who lives there and doesn't.  Unfortunately, I'm not as up on Edgewater, but I recall when I was looking that it was a bit more expensive.
  • We live a few blocks south of the heart of Andersonville and really love it. It's as much of the "city" as any of the other neighborhoods - Roscoe Village, Lincoln Square, etc. I think people from the burbs only think of the Loop or Michigan Ave as the city, but those are places that people who live here generally avoid, since it's tourist central.

Clark is the main street of Andersonville and is filled with cute shops and restaurants.

Andersonville is actually a part of Edgewater, kind of like Wrigleyville is a part of Lakeview. Anybody that lives in Andersonville, actually is a resident of the Edgewater neighborhood, it just means they live in that 5 block radius around Clark.

Edgewater can get a little gritty around the edges, but that's where the more reasonable pricing is, so it's a trade off.

  • JJenni - what areas up there would you suggest avoiding?  DH and I are renting in Lakeview now, starting to look at buying, and are considering Andersonville but aren't sure what parts are "good" or "bad".  We're planning on going up there next weekend to check it out and try to get a feel for it, but if there are specific streets/sections that you would recommend avoiding that would be really helpful!  TIA!
  • I live on the border of Andersonville/Uptown and I love our neighborhood.  5 years ago I wouldn't have lived here, but it's great now.

I'm 4 blocks from the main section of Andersonville and 3 blocks from the lake.  The redline is a block away and LSD makes the loop trip 10 min at off peak times.  I also love that Wrigley is in walking distance and that shooping is close and convenient.

It's definately the city and has its quirks.  I still am careful when I walk alone at night (the same way I did when I lived in Gold Coast and Boystown) but 99.9% of the time I feel safe.

  • I would say you probably want to avoid Broadway. The rest, you'll be able to tell when you get there. I would recommend driving by any area you're interested in around 9p, and then you'll get a feel for how safe the streets are.

Gigi - where are you living now? I think when I met you at the GTG last November, we were going to move to Logan Square, but we ended up switching to new construction over by Clark/Wilson. You sound like you're nearby!

  • I think that Andersonville is great, but I don't live there. I agree with Gigi--you have to be careful no matter where you live in the city.
