Moving to Hartford

Hi!  I see in the thread below that most of you are on a private board, but I hope that someone may see this and help me out.

I am in Cleveland, OH and my husband just got a job offer in Hartford that I am pretty sure we will take.  He also has an offer in Rochester, NY (my hometown) and a current job here in Cleveland, so it's a big decision.

We know very little about Hartford, so choosing a place to live is the biggest challenge.  I've looked at a lot of houses online, and people have recommended West Hartford and Glastonbury as places that might be good for us.  I've also looked in Newington.

We have a baby on the way (i'm due in 6 days), so we want a good school district and community.  If you were moving to the area, where would you live?  The job is in East Hartford.

TIA to anyone who can help!

Re: Moving to Hartford

  • The Hartford area is interesting- the city itself is pretty poor ($) but the surrounding suburbs are wealthy. West Hartford and Glastonbury are both great school districts, both are close to the city but with their own good restaurants, shopping, etc. Cons: sort of snobby and competitive.  If you want a quieter and more rural town with excellent schools you can look at Granby, Simsbury, Avon (the Farmington Valley).  All these towns, including WH and Glast. are very expensive in terms of housing.  (like, for a decent 3 br starter house we're talking at least $250k or so). Oh, and CT is very divided in terms of the CT river. Glastonbury and EH are east of the river, which some people feel is less prestigious, and the other towns I mentioned are west of the river.

I live in Windsor, which I like because it's diverse and middle-class, however the schools aren't great (big racial achievement gap) so our DS will probably go to a Catholic school if we stay here.  Newington, Wethersfield, Rocky Hill are also close, good schools, and more down to earth, but more suburban than the Farmington Valley towns.  Good luck with your search!

  • Good school districts

Simbury, Avon, Granby, East granby, canton, ellington, glastonbury, burlington, farmington

    Ok/school districts

west hartford, east windsor, suffield, enfield, newington, rocky hill, south windsor

    Overburdened school districts

Windsor, Hartford, New Britain, east hartford, vernon, manchester, bristol

  • Posts above are correct, in addition - a commute through west hartford for a job in East Hartford would be challenging.   I would stick to a north commute (rocky hill, newington, berlin, middletown, glastonbury) or a west commute (tolland, ellington)

My top two towns for you -

Glastonbury is a fabulous town.  great amenities, just got a whole foods, great little shopping plaza (more boutiques then big box stores)  and fabulous restaurants.

Tolland was rated one of the top 100 towns in the usa (or something like that).  Great school system, more farmland then retail, and small town feel.  10 minutes you can drive to huge shopping/restaurant area in Manchester.

  • Thanks for these responses!
  • In addition to what has been already said I would recommend Newington, Rocky Hill or Wethersfield
  • Good luck with your decission to relocate.  I don't have much experience with the area you are looking for.  The PP have some good ideas for you.  :)

  • I don't think Glastonbury is quite all its cracked up to be.. I'd recommend Rocky Hill - more down to earth.
  • i know this is late but south windsor has a really good school district and so does west hartford (but the parents are a little more pushy and flaunty about $)  ellington is not that good and i don't remember all the others that were listed in the oher post but some of the systems listed as good were not what i'd consider good.  i guess it depends what you are looking at in terms of what makes a good school system.
