I don't post very often & just saw your post about moving to the Menomonee Falls area...my husband and I live in the Falls & are moving to Madison. We are trying to sell our 2 bedroom/1 bath house (it has a detached garage w/workshop area). It's a small house, but it's completely updated with a really big yard (double lot), in a great part of town. Monthly payments (including taxes & utilities) would probably be around 1k, or a little less.
I know you mentioned renting, but I thought I'd throw this out there, in case you might be of interest. Let me know if you'd like any more information (my husband is commuting to Madison currently, so we're looking to move ASAP).
