I thought it was incredible, too! It was so moving that I was really touched by the storyline. It really was a sad allegory for humans and how we treat own kind, from the MNU agents to the gangs inside District 9. Even the main character does things that make you angry. But, at least he gives us hope when his physical and mental metamorphosis starts to accelerate and he begins to understand the aliens better. The last shot of the movie left me in tears. It's definitely a must-see and I hope that there's a sequel.

I couldn't stand this movie!!! I expected a MUCH better movie. I thought the movie was more of a joke. And concentration camps??? Seriously??? I guess that hits home for me b/c of the many ppl I've met that have survived the Holocaust and those currently suffering in Darfur should NOT be looked at as aliens.
Oh and then aliens dress in human clothes. Did you notice the alien prostitute??? I couldn't stop laughing at that. This was def entertaining.
The only good thing I saw out of this movie was how it was filmed...like if you were watching the news most of the time w/the ticker at the bottom. That was great.
I understand what you mean. In the beginning, it did seem satirical. I also like how it was shot like a documentary.
Maybe it was the director's point to have to use aliens to open up people's eyes to what goes on in the rest of the world, especially third-world countries.
I absolutely loved this movie, but you know this by now after reading my blog heh
It really affected us too - made you think of all the terrible things humankind is capable of doing.
And as for the alien comparison with other ethnic groups - I don't think their intent was to insult them by referring to them as aliens...I think the movie was trying to illustrate how hate continues to exist.
At Comic-Con, the director mentioned that it was based on a short story, which now I'd love to read! Maybe you can feature it on your blog, Adri!
I've actually been researching some poetry and possible short stories to post about in between the novels.
I'm sorry! It was based off of the director's short film.
Oh well, no biggie!
Meli - I couldn't agree more! I absolutely thought that the movie's intent was to depict the current nature of mankind . The movie was believable because it showed mankind committing atrocities towards the aliens - which is what would likely occur if something like that were to happen, especially in a nation where civil rights are already trampled upon.
It wasn't what I was expecting, but it was a very smart, well-made movie and I enjoyed it.
