Most overrated college football team?

ESPN did a story on this...who do you think is the most overrated college football team? I guess voters picked Ohio State, but my personal opinion is USC...

Re: Most overrated college football team?

  • Oregon.

They are rated high every year, and it's just because they have Phil Knight paying for everything.

I wouldn't say USC is overrated, but I am certainly tired of them.?

  • Both OSU and USC

I can agree with this. Oregon is always up there every single year. However, I shouldn't talk about them since they smoked us in the bowl game last year [I'm an Okla. State alum] and am still a little bitter. :P

    Yes

  • OU. They've lost FIVE of their last six bowl appearances. I'm a Texas fan so I am extremely annoyed with them especially after beating them last year and them getting the bid over Texas.

I'm a little embarrassed that this is how my alma mater represents themselves!?

These two quotes sum up Oregon football perfectly:

"Ducks are the college football version of Paris Hilton...they're famous for no reason, they look pretty and they got a rich daddy". -ESPN?s Kirk Herbstreit?

"Wow, that's different. That's unique. ... I don't like it. I don't even like shaking hands when you get out there with the captains for the coin flip."?? Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli on having to shake hands with Boise State before the game.

That quote from Kirk was funny...even though some people could start saying that for OSU soon if we don't show up this season...

As for what the QB said...wow.

  • USC and Notre Dame.
  • USC

They don't have the strongest conference and get ranked highly every. single. year.  I'd love for USC to play a season in the SEC...their record wouldn't be nearly as nice.

  • The entire SEC.

yes they are a good conference, but they aren't the holy grail of football. Contrary to the belief of those in it, there are in fact other great conferences.

I agree with this + USC...though I am obviously biased.

P.S. IrishBride, haven't seen you much since the knot...congratulations!

I'm also back at ND for the next two years.

Ditto. They have to play all of the crappy non conference teams to inflate their records since they are all equally "great" and just beat each other. Psh.

  • While I can't say the same for Florida (I wish ours was better), plenty of SEC teams have solid non-conference schedules.

  • I am surprised by all of the SEC picks...In BCS Championship games, the SEC is the ONLY conference with a perfect record (5-0).  There is one SEC team with an all time record under .500 ...just one.

I just noticed this...how could I miss this?! OU is DEFINITELY overrated...how do you get so far and NOT win a BCS championship since I was in high school?!

I really want to post this graphic on FB for all my friends...

So? Simply winning the games they get into isn't enough. A lot of it also involves how many you get into total. Finally, the SEC (and ACC) refuse to play up north when its cold, so its hard for me (a Floridian, mind you) to take them too seriously. The pros have to brave the cold to prove themselves.

For example the Big Ten has more BCS game appearances than any other conference. And, I'm not a Big Ten fan so this is not bias speaking.

The Big 12 has been in more championships (BCS) than any other conference.

Yes, the SEC is great. I'm not taking that away from them. But they are not THE only great conference and I'm tired of them pretending they are.

  • Definitely Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Alabama.

  • As a die hard ND fan, even I will admit that we are often overrated. But at the same time, we have a LOT of haters who underrate us as well (Mark May for example). But I do agree that we are often, sadly, overrrated.

Mark May hates on everyone.  Don't feel too bad.

Sorry, but I am LOL'ing at the proposition that a team has to play in the cold to "prove itself."

Eh, I just laugh that they refuse. LIke I said, they are going to have to when they go pro. But almost every southern team refuses to go north after september.

Is it the main factor? Heck no. But I always find it amusing.

Again, my only point here is that the SEC is not the ONLY great conference, yet many in that conference are pretty damn sure it is.

  • btw, I'm actually a semi gator fan. I grew up one.
