Name Change

I am changing my last name & am wondering... did people spend the money & get one of those name change kits? Or did you just do it yourself? I am going to send in a form to get a certified copy of my marriage certificate. Seems like this is the first step & then SS & then driver's license? Is this correct?

Re: Name Change

  • I just did it myself. It's a pain but worth it. Yes those are the right steps so far.
  • I did it myself, too.  It's time consuming, for sure, but I didn't think it was so hard that I needed to pay for a kit.

I started with SS and DL, too - from there, everything is cake because you've got the two most important documents.

    Good luck!

Save the money and do it yourself.  It's not as hard as you think.  If you feel you need to get this done quickly, purchase a few extra marriage licenses.  You'll be able to change quickly.  However you can't do much unless your SS and DL are changed.

  • Also don't stress if you don't have time to get everything done right away.  I have my SS changed, but that is it at this point.  Just carry a copy of the marriage certificate with you so if you ever are questioned you have proof that you were just married.  Have fun :)
  • I think you have to go to the SS office and DMV in person anyway. The kit just has forms for credit cards and what not. I wouldn't bother with it. Just make a list of everything you can think of. Start with SS & DMV then go from there. You don't have to do it all in one day.

  • I just did it myself.  It wasn't as bad as I expected.  I started with my SS and DL.  From there it is easy.  Most of my credit cards, I just changed over the phone.  Also, I didn't change everything right away.  We have been married for almost 2 years and I am still finding things I forgot to change. It's usually things I don't use a lot, like my Best Buy card.

  • Ditto what all the other girls have said. I did it myself and it didn't seem that hard at all. The only pain is standing in line.
