Re: this makes me feel really oogie...

  • I have mixed feelings. It's happened before and I can understand it. But the IOC has dropped the practice of gender testing so perhaps others should as well.  But with gender lines get blurred a bit more every year I wonder if new rules won't eventually have to be put in place. Should a woman that was born a male but changed genders compete with the females? I don't have the answer, but I think eventually sports are going to be faced with this questions and should start preparing some answers.

  • The whole thing is really disturbing to me.  It's so unfortunate that her win and accomplishment are being overshadowed by this controversy.  And why now?  Why AFTER she competed?  And the testing process sounds humiliating and degrading.

From the few stories I've read it's being done AFTER because it's a lengthy process (a few weeks) and they couldn't do it prior to the race. She apparently just came on the scene big time in the last month or so leaving little time to do this prior. I agree it's too bad her accomplishment is being overshadowed but same as with steriod testing I think it's best to just get the test out of the way and move on so it doesn't overshadow the athlete any longer than necessary.

    I agree.

Its hard because they answers aren't always cut and dry, but I really wish they could have handled this better.

  • This whole thing makes me really angry. I don't understand how unusual talent is enough of a reason to require gender testing.  I can't imagine how humiliating the public nature of this must be to a teenager. And her headmaster saying that she must be a boy b/c she "liked soccer and she wore pants to school." Really?
