DH & I want to roam around the city for a day, just stopping in for a lunch somewhere, shopping at some cute trendy (but not too $$$) shops, stop for a beer or margarita somewhere (outdoors?), maybe hit an outdoor flea market or something too.
I keep reading about different neighborhood names, but don't know the actual streets that we should walk around. Where do I park? Should I take the EL instead? (coming from the suburbs). Might have bags of stuff from shopping, so I prefer to drive.
Please give me some reference points on where to park, and what streets to walk around. I have no clue when I hear the neighborhood names. TIA!
Re: need chicago neighborhood help
I live in a really cute neighborhood. You can walk down to Six Corners and there is an El stop right there (Damen- Blue line, so if you're coming from the NW burbs that would be ideal). There's tons of shopping, restaurants, bars, etc. Here's directions: http://www.sixcornerschicago.com/directions/index.php.
Or you can go to Michigan Avenue for shopping and all of those things, but it's way busier and more expensive. And parking is at least $20.
There is also great shopping and food in Lincoln Park. Streets would be Armitage and Sheffield. The Brown line is right there.

but what streets are those in???
Ok, I'll give you the main intersections for the neighborhood that have been mentioned - and then you should be able to type the intersection in to google maps to help you with directions.
Lincoln Square: intersection of Lincoln Ave/Western Ave/Lawrence
Lakeview: this is a big area that technically includes Wrigleyville (along Clark St. from Addison down to Belmont) as well as Boystown (Halsted St. at Roscoe)
Lincoln Park: I try to stay as far away as possible from this area (pricey and crowded!) so I'll let someone else chime in. There are some fun restaurants and shops along Armitage near Halsted St. as well as Webster and Halsted.
I highly recommend Wicker Park/Bucktown. The main intersection is North Ave. and Damen. This area, in my opinion, most closely matched what you are looking for. It is artsy but has recently become a popular spot for boutiquy-type shops and trendy restaurants. To get there from the suburbs, take the Kennedy (90/94) to the North Ave. exit. Drive west on North Ave, past Ashland, to near Damen.
In any of these places you'll be able to street park, but bring money for meters. Also, be patient. Its hard to find parking spots especially on the weekend. You'll find a spot, just might take a bit. Have fun.
i agree with some PPs...bucktown / wicker park is my fave. take the blue line to the damen stop. lots of restaurants, boutiques right there.
are the shops expensive here? I am looking for something more budget-friendly, not like $200 for a top.
