i'm looking at going back to school for a masters at PSU...any thoughts on the school? i'm debating between two programs right now...
i have a BS in zoology but don't use it...I've worked in non-profit since graduation...so my options are...
1. masters in public administration with a specialization in non profit management (two years)
2. get my license for teaching (one year) and then get a masters in education (a second year)
so either program takes two years..i just can't decide which program to do. i've always wanted to be a teacher, but i love doing non profit stuff, too. my original major in college was music education.
okay i'm not really asking for help picking which degree to pursue, but if any of you have experience with PSU and what you think of it?
Re: portland state university, anyone?
I didn't go there but I've heard some not-so-good things about their teaching program.?I'm in the 5th year at Pacific University and there are a lot of people who did their undergrad at PSU but transferred over for grad school because of the PSU reputation. (Though I haven't actually gone there myself so this is all just word of mouth.)
I received my BS (Biology!) from PSU in 2005. As a student there, I noticed that PSU is one of the most unorganized organizations that I have ever come in contact with. I have a friend who just got a language certification through PSU and she experienced many of the same things I did. Then again, I have one other friend who went through the teaching program at PSU and loved it for elementary ed. Perhaps it's because the school is mostly run by students cycling through for work study, but who knows...
I was accepted into the MPA program and I got through the first 3 classes and absolutely hated it.Hated it. Hated it. HATED IT. A particular instructor was absolutely awful. Needless to say I kept searching and found the place I landed. I am currently 12 months into my 18 month program and I love it. Love the staff. Love the students. Love the administration. I'd pick this school all over again.
If I had to go back in time and pick my undergraduate school all over again, I wouldn't pick PSU. Yeah, the tuition was less than other Oregon schools, but I'm not sure that I would pick a school on that criteria alone.
Concordia has an excellent teaching program. I know of several graduates from that school. However, it is mighty expensive.
Anyhow, hope that helps!
I've taken several post-bach classes at PSU and I agree. It is completely unorganized. My husband went to Concordia to for his Masters int teaching and loved it there. I also had sevearl friensd go through the program, including one who is currently in it.
