Tried La Hacienda last night

and we were so disappointed!  The food was so bland, no flavor at all.  I had enchiladas suizas and those even said "spicy" on the menu.  Um, yeah, not quite.  We asked for some hot sauce and even that wasn't spicy.  That was one of the few Mexican places we had yet to try in Madison, so we were kind of looking forward to it, but it was a big let down.  Anyone else have experiences (good/bad) here?  Just wondering if this is typical or if we just went on a bad night.

Re: Tried La Hacienda last night

  • I've been there twice, once at bar time about 10 years ago (I can't judge my experience that time...)and the second last year. I thought it was good but I love traditional Mexican food. I'm not a fan of Pedro's or other Americanized places.
  • I've never been there. Guess I'll skip it now!

I really like Pasqual's near Hilldale. Their outdoor seating is really nice, they make excellent drinks, and I really like that their onsite bakery. It's my favorite Mexican place, even though it's really not very authentic either. Probably more Tex-Mex than Mexican.

  • melly, I agree Pedros=blah.  After living in Mexico, I need my spicy Mex food!!  I hate the "Americanized" mex food, too. I guess I'll have to stick w/ Laredos.

Brooklyn, I've not tried pasqual's.  Maybe after baby is here I can check out their yummy drinks!  ;)

  • You LIVED in MX? You lucky girl! One day I hope to be like Magda from "There's Something About Mary" a shriveled old woman living in Mexico :)

Laredo's is my all time favorite place. I love them.

Right now this child doesn't like Laredo's, it is in love with Taco Bell. Can you imagine? I can't believe it is my child.

  • LOL @ Magda!  I lived there for 6 months in college.  So fun!!

There is def. something to be said for Taco Bell while pg!!  I have made a few runs to the border during this pg!  I'm sure your daughter will "refine" her tastes for authentic Mex food once she's older...Wink

  • I'm not a fan of La Hacienda either. Padros is even worse.Stick out tongue

    We LOVE Laredos!

  • I remember when I first got pregnant I saw that Taco Bell commercial with the pregnant woman and the H that had to run out and get her TB. I was thinking I wasn't like that with Jackson. So then fast forward a few months and it is my new love!
  • I was only there once. I don't remember the food (it was over 3 years ago). It must not have been great since I haven't been back. I think the service was not so great either. I do love Laredos though!

  • Hey!

If you haven't tried it yet, Antojilos el Toril (my spelling is probably off) on Cottage Grove Rd is about as authentic as you get in Madison.  It's small and family owned, and the food it to die for!!!  And, much cheaper than pedros and la hacienda as well.  Not as much of a selection, but authentic.

  • welcel...sounds perfect!  Thanks for the suggestion.
  • I have never been impressed with the food there. I usually go to larado's for Mexican in Madison.
