Tell me about Clairemont

My husband and I are also relocating to San Diego, I am pretty active on the NYC board, so i am looking forward to getting to know you ladies!

we found a great apartment building in Claimemont while we were visiting in July. We liked it because it seem pretty centrally located. Both of us will be driving towards Escandido for work instead of driving downtown so I am hoping traffic will not be to bad. Can anyone tell me about the area is there anything I should know? We are still waiting to hear if we will be out there in October or January. I have a little one that will be going into daycare so any tips about the area would be super helpful!

TIA!

Re: Tell me about Clairemont

  • Escondido is pretty far from Clairemont.  Clairemont is centrally located, which is nice but I think it depends what you are looking for.  What area specifically in Clairemont?  Some areas can be a little run down and gangster.
  • Clariemont is more central in the county, while Escondido is North County. Agreed with previous poster - some areas are quite nice, while others can be questionable.

Nearest cities to Escondido to look at/consider: Rancho Bernardo, Poway, San Marcos, Vista (again, some areas are good, others aren't great). Heading north of Escondido, you could also look at Valley Center or Fallbrook. Those would make much more sense than Clairemont in terms of location to work. Also, they tend to be more suburban/family-based communities -- granted, this could just be my perspective from experience, but the only people I've known to live in Clairemont have been young college students and/or retired couples.

  • I personally don't care much for the Clairemont area.  If I worked in Escondido, I would consider living in Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos or Carmel Mountain Ranch.  I have lived in all those areas and prefer them to Clairemont.  Plus your commute will be less, which will be nice.

  • I work in Escondido, and I live in Mira Mesa, right off the 15. ?Very close to Scripps Ranch. ?It only takes me about 20 min. to get to work. ?Mira Mesa is also very central--20-25 min to just about everything-beach, downtown, airport, north county. ?
  • I live in Escondido and I like it up here.  Our "little" city gets a lot of crap because we have a large mexican population and our city council tends to be a bit nutty!!  If you are going to be working IN Escondido, you really should live in Escondido.

Northbound traffic isnt that bad since they opened up the carpool lanes to the mall.  Most of the traffic is headed south in the morning and north in the afternoon.

While Clairemont is closer to downtown, it would be better to live closer to work.  If you arent used to sitting in traffic, it will get old after awhile!  Also, our public transportation SUCKS so if something were to happen and you were carless...you are pretty much hosed!  :)

  • My work is actually in Rancho Bernardo and DH while in the acadamy will be based off the 15 I think it's Monroe College (Maybe Mira Mesa, it is a community college where the police academy is). My concern was that DH has never lived outside of NYC and so  Mira Mesa (if I have the area correct) was a tad under developed compared to what we are used to here. Also, once he is finished with the academy he could be based anywhere in SD County.

The section of Clairemont appeared to be very clean and family orriented, but still with in the city. But I will heed the advice and further check out the community just to make sure we are not going to end up witnessing a drive by....

    Thanks for your Help!

Well you can get a drive by ANYWHERE in San Diego Couty  :)  I'd worry more about rogue tank rampages in Clairemont more than a drive by (do a google search for tank rampage san diego for the full story!).

Mira Mesa is NOT underdeveloped by any means--its right next to MCAS Miramar and has a huge Marine/Military population as well as a good sized Filipino population.

We are a county of suburbs--you will be hard pressed to find a ton of stuff in Downtown San Diego but all the outlying communites have everything you need.

If your DH has never lived outside of NYC--he will probably be in for a huge shock.  We are definitely a car culture out here and we are more casual and laid back than some parts of the East Coast.

Its Miramar College that has the Academy.

You guys might check into Rancho Penasquitos, Poway, or Rancho Bernardo for a place to live.  The suburbs arent city-fied but if you are looking for a family friendly neighborhood those are good places to start.

  • Thank you! I will check it out!
  • My mom lives in Escondido, she just moved from Alta Vista apartments which are super nice you should check them out!

I recommend the North area of Escondido or the San Pasqual area. It's a great city with alot to offer.

  • I actually really enjoyed living in Clairemont.  We lived in the Coral Bay Apartments and it really is centrally located.  To get to the beach, downtown, or to work (I worked in Kearny Mesa at the time) was SO easy.  I relocated to Vista later and didn't like it up there (I would avoid Vista, but San Marcos, Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Valley, and Poway are nice).  Anyway, I used to deliver for Pizza Hut in Clairemont and it's hit or miss if you're in a nice area.  Basically, the closer to the 5 freeway the better.  Once you start heading towards the 805 and Apartment City over by Charger you get into a bit of a sketchy area.  But then south of Balboa off Genesee is nice.
