Indy suburbs

Hi ladies!  We're planning on visiting some suburbs while we're in town, and I have a couple questions.  We'll be looking at Carmel, Fishers, and Zionsville on the north, and Brownsburg, Avon, and Plainfield on the west.  What is the commute time into the city from these neighborhoods?  Is there an area in Indy where most of the law firms are centered?  Also, do any of these suburbs have downtown areas with shops, restaurants, etc?  It's important to us that the area we live in have a town feel where you can still walk to some places, and don't need a car for everything.  Thanks!

Re: Indy suburbs

  • Hi!! I would estimate the commute times (at peak rushour) to downtown for the suburbs you mentioned as the following:

Carmel-45 minutes, Fishers, an hour, Zionsville 45-minutes, Brownsburg-30 minutes, Avon 45 minutes, and Plainfield 45 minutes.

Indy ladies who are more used to the commute than me please feel free to correct me!! Maybe I am overgeneralizing but most of the law firms are downtown--DH interviewed with a couple that were "near northside" in the revitilized area around Mass Ave.  A couple of the bigger firms have both downtown and northside offices.

I think Zionsville has a super cute downtown, and I know Carmel has a downtown area, but I have also been told it is pretty "plastic/fake"

But decide for yourself!! Have a wonderful visit, I hope you love Indy!!

  • I live in/near Greenwood (southside) and work downtown on the circle and I have a 15/20 minute commute. We have some massive and beautiful homes here to and I think sometimes underestimated.  I have a few lawyer friends that all work dowtown but there are plenty of firms all over city and burbs.. just depends on your speciality/interest.

I would also suggest looking at some of the downtown neighborhoods; Chantem Arch District (near Mass. Ave), Lockerbie Court area, Fall Creek Place, and a little further north Broad Ripple.. all have houses with yards, easy access to downtown, and of course great Hoosier neighbors ;)

Agreed!  The southside is so underestimated!  I love my 15-20 minute commute to downtown (and home).

I also reccomend checking out the older revitalized areas she mentioned.  You can probably get some great deals!

If you need a realtor let me know - ours is fabulous!

    Have a great trip!

  • For Plainfield, I think the commute time depends on your accessibility to 70. I can make it to downtown in about 20 minutes, but I also drive like a bat out of hell.

I would say Zionsville has the cutest downtown with a decent amount of shopping. Carmel and Fishers have nice areas, but they do seem a bit "pre-constructed" - unfortunately you will need to use your car if you live anywhere but in the Indy proper neighborhoods. Indiana is all about urban sprawl and they haven't thought out compact development very well :(

I would also recommend looking into neighborhoods like Broad Ripple, Fall Creek, etc. because they are more established communities within Indy that have that local, town feel to them.

I live on the SWside of Indy and it only takes me about 30 minutes to get downtown and I live a bit out in the country.

I think most of the major firms are downtown or maybe on the northside?

Move along, nothing to see here.....
  • I used to live in Carmel and I loved it. If you live near the Monon trail you can bike to the city center area (and further into Indy). I would often bike to an outdoor mall. In general, Carmel is pretty bike friendly. Some of the buildings are a bit fake feeling, but the actual shops are neat. I lived in an apartment complex where I could walk to a grocery store, 2 salons, pub, and salad shop. My gasoline budget really misses living there!

A lot of people I work with live in Fishers and Noblesville and they complain about the commute constantly.

I live on the southside now, and while it's not quite as pretty as my old neighborhood, it's pretty nice. And traveling to downtown is pretty easy/fast.

  • We live just north of Carmel and really love it, and in fact are thinking about moving into Carmel next year to be closer to the Monon.  There are a few restaurants located on the Monon and other shops although we haven't checked out very many yet.  The Carmel Farmer's Market is also really nice and if you get a chance, I recommend checking it out.  I work in Fishers and honestly do not like it there just because the traffic is terrible.  I think the problem with Fishers is that it just grew too fast.  I have some friends that live in Zionsville and really love it.  They have a nice shopping area and a few restaurants as well.

Fishers, Carmel, and I believe Greenwood have bus routes that go downtown.  I have never actually used it so I have no idea what it is like, but if I ended up working downtown I would definitely consider it.

  • Greenwood does have a bus that goes to downtown from around the Greenwood Park Mall area (off of US-31) but I haven't taken it.  I agree it's about 15-20 min to downtown by car.  I love Greenwood, we bought our house there in March, but don't feel as though it's a walking community.  I definitely agree that if that's more of what you want, you might need to look in Indy proper.  Broad Ripple I've heard positive things about over and over again but haven't had the chance to go there yet.  Definitely want to go explore it and eventually take our black lab down there b/c its supposed to have very dog friendly areas and a doggie bakery that I'd love to go to (with or without the pup).  Good luck!

Also heard great things about Zionsville, but one of the reasons we decided on Greenwood was because we thought our money went further (more house for the money).  My husband works at the airport, so Carmel didn't make as much sense for his commute.
