Hey gals,
so some have you may have seen that my hubby and I are moving to Eugene in about a week and a half so I can to grad school.
i am trying to figure out what to pack...and i am a new yorker, so i have noo idea what Oregon weather is like.
i have heavy duty snow boots, snow gear, but i thought it doesn't really snow much in Oregon. is that true? i'm used to a foot or more of snow on the ground here in NY. so if it doesnt snow more than a couple of inches, i won't bring that stuff. i heard that it rains allll the time though, so i bet i need to get myself some heavy duty umbrellas..
what is an approx. typical yearly temp range? where i live, it typically ranges from 0 (sometimes -18 with wind chill!) to 95 degrees throughout the year. so i certainly have a range of clothes for all sorts of weather. i'd like to bring only what i need of course, especially since we are trying to pack everything that we need in our car (yup, we are driving across the country!) and won't have much room for unnecessary things.
Thanks everyone!
We are really excited to move to Oregon
Re: Oregon Weather?
It doesn't really snow here but it seems the past couple of years have brought some crazy weather (PDX got over a foot of snow this past December and a couple of weeks ago several days over 100).
Typically, our lows get down to the lower 30s and our highs get into the 90s. Starting in about mid-October, it will get pretty grey and we'll start getting a lot of rain...nothing a fleece and a gortex jacket can't handle. The grey/rain should stick around through April-ish and then we'll start warming up with a lot of rain. We don't really hit our summer until the end of June, beginning of July and it typically sticks around through September.
The snow gear is great for going up to the mountain though. The beauty of living in the Willamette Valley is that you're a little more than an hour from snow/skiing and a little more than an hour from the beach.
Happy road tripping!
Honestly, I would bring everything you have... our weather varies so much!! Summer is typically anywhere from 80-100 and HOT. Fall is cooler, typically 65ish during the day, high 40's at night, and it rains from October-March. Winter, we usually get a few inches of snow, 3-4 times throughout December-February. Spring is gorgeous, fluffy white clouds and mid 70's from March-May.
I really wear everything from light sundresses to thick wool winter coats. Flip flops to Ugg boots.
Oregon is famous for needing your heater on in your car in the morning, and then needing the AC on in the afternoon.
And YES bring some umbrellas!
In Eugene, if it is icy or snows, we shut down. The bus system shuts down and so does the community college and all the K-12 schools. U of O DOES NOT! I have had to walk a mile in inches of snow to get to class, because they don't cancel class just for snow. So I would bring your boots. You never know here, seriously. U of O hasn't shut down for whether in years. We don't get lots of snow, only a small (few inches) once or twice in the winter.
Don't worry too much about umbrellas, just one and it doesnt' have to be heavey duty or anything. You'll also want a water resistant jacket with a hood. So much more convenient than toting an umbrella especially when you have books and such to carry.
LOL! I buy probably 5 umbrellas every September. 2 for my car, 1 for my purse, and then I always forget them when I go to a restaurant or Blazer game! I find cute cheap ones at Fred Meyer's for about $6. I love umbrellas!
It doesn't really rain as must as mist and sprinkle. Actually, I think New York gets more rain than Oregon. It's just very grey and wet from about late October through March. It still rains in the spring, but we also have more sunny, beautiful days. In the winter, we rarely get snow. Last year we had a freak winter and received about a foot of snow, but the entire city shut down, so I wouldn't worry too terribly much about bringing snow gear, unless you plan on going up to the mountain(s).
Summers are fabulous, and completely make up for the other seasons. It's usually clear as a bell and highs in the 70's/80's most of the summer. It can definitely get hotter, but it only lasts for a few days. Most people do not have A/C, but wish that they do about 5 days during the summer. Fall is lovely. September is really an extension of summer and starts cooling down toward late September. We have some crisp, sunny fall days and then it starts to rain again around the end of October.
