Nice Columbia neighborhoods...
I posted something recently about us moving to SC. We were looking in the Orangeburg area due to work; however, we're finding that it's probably not an area for us! Most of the people we've talked to commute in from Columbia but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the good areas around there. This is so overwhelming and we don't have a lot of time to look so any advice/suggestions on that area would be greatly appreciated! Ideally, I'd like to be close to shopping, restaurants, etc. since I'll be home during the day (to start off). We don't have kids yet but good schools are important to us and we certainly want to be in a good neighborhood where we can meet other people and be close to things around there. I'm trying not to be high-maintenance about it but I'm in Grand Rapids and I'm used to being able to live 10 minutes outside the city but still having easy access to everything. I realize I'm not going to find that everywhere but it's nice to get input from others who live there to get your thoughts on the places that are nicer. Thank you, in advance, for your help!
Re: Nice Columbia neighborhoods...
I don't know much about neighborhoods, but I know that Five Points is really popular for food and shopping. Columbiana Mall is pretty nice as well.
P.S. Good move! I think you'll be happier living in Columbia, even if you do have to commute.

AGREED!!! I was a little concerned for you when you said you were moving to Orangeburg - especially with what you said you like to do in your free time. Columbia will be a much better fit!
While I went to USC, I am really not familiar with the individual neighborhoods. I can ask for the opinion of some of my friends who have setteled there. Offhand I could suggest the Shandon and Forest Acres areas. Unless things have changed since I went to college, I would stay away from anything on Two Notch Road.
Will you all be renting or looking to purchase? If you are going to purchase something, your realtor should be able to steer you in the right direction.
Hi! We live in the Irmo area and we really love it! Although we will be moving soon due to H's job. Shopping and eating is only 10 minutes away and downtown is a quick 15-20 minutes away. The Richland county school district here is top notch! Our home will be on the market in the next week if you are interested. :-)
I'm a teacher in Columbia. If you want to live in an area with good schools choose Lexington 1 or Richland 2 schools. I looked on the map and living in Lexington 1 would put you closer to Orangeburg than Richland 2 would.
While pp is right that Shandon is a wonderful Columbia neighborhood close to downtown, Richland 1 is not a good school district. Even their better schools cannot keep good teachers despite being the district that pays the best in the area.
I would find a relator and tell them you would like to live in an area that zones for Lexington 1, specifically White Knoll High. (I reccomend White Knoll because their zoning would put you closer to Orangeburg. Plus the area is developing quickly.)
good luck!
