verizon fios v. comcast

hi everyone

H and I are moving to cherry hill soon and I was wondering if any of you had opinions on the cable/internet/phone service. both mine and his parents live in the area and have comcast, but we're leaning towards verizon.

any horror stories that would persuade us to stay with comcast?

Re: verizon fios v. comcast

  • Both my parents and in laws have fios and love it.    My H and I looked into switching from Comcast to fios, but once we added in the extras we wanted (HD, extra boxes, DVR), it was going to be more expensive.  We also have a promotional rate through comcast which was up to expire this past month but my H called and asked if they could extend it.  He told them if not, we were switching to fios so they did extend the deal.

  • i don't think we'll need alot of extras since we do most of our movie watching through netflix anyway and we don't have an HDTV. H is just upset because the comcast deal we have now at our apt includes ESPN, but the same plan in CH would not include ESPN.
  • I think there are no major reasons to not go with fios if you aren't looking for the extras.  One positive is that they get a lot of network shows On Demand for free that comcast charges for.  Last time I was up at my parents' I watched about 10 episodes of The Office!
  • oh, that almost makes it worth it. last weekend we were home at H's parents and there was nothing on so we tried some on demand - anything that was worth watching cost money.

  • I just got Fios and it is AWESOME!  It's a million times better then Comcast.  We had major problems with comcast and were giddy when Fios came to town.
  • My father works for Comcast and often gets "special" deals.  If you are interested in speaking with him send me an e-mail and I'll give you his cell.  mfuller12 at gmail.com

thanks for the info - i'll have to talk to H and see what he thinks. i don't really watch a ton of TV, so i'm kind of leaving the final decision up to him.

  • We have Comcast b/c they didn't have FIOS when we moved here. Our promos just ended and I called and threatened to switch, so they lowered our bill. We have only had issues with our internet b/c of a bad splitter, but other than that we like Comcast.
  • I am thinking of switching to FIOS because of their promotional rates.
  • I switched to Fios b/c I was having issues with Comcast and I absolutely love it...we are paying less for more and the internet came with a free wireless router which was a plus for me.
  • i'm going to be working from home once we move, so the internet is very important for me to stay connected to the office - does anyone who has FIOS have trouble keeping the connection?

i'm not sure if it's just the area we're in now or comcast in general, but our internet connection is either dropped completely or so slow you can't do anything online more and more often lately.

  • We had HORRIBLE issues with losing connectivity to the internet with comcast all the time. We would get insane lag spikes with the internet and the cable TV. Comcast insisted that it was our house or our computers/TV. Since we switched to Fios we haven't had the issue since.
  • We switched to FIOS and love it--more channels for less $ (and we have just about every single thing you can add...including a second box, oye!)

My husband spent HOURS, I mean literally about two hours one night, on the phone going round and round and round with Comcast who simply would not extend the previous rate or cut us any deals.  When we called several weeks later to cancel after the FIOS guy left, the lady was like "oh we could have done something for you."  Too late.

  • update: we've decided to go with FIOS. i'll be working from home so internet connectivity is a BIG issue for me.

    thanks for your help!
