Underwater camera? Camera "protector"?

So, I'm going on VACATION!!!  Squeal, jump, snaps!

Anyway, I'm bringing my point and shoot and maybe my dslr (probably not though).  Should I get a case for it or some contraption where I can bring it underwater when I go snorkeling or when I'm floating around on my tube?  You'll have to excuse my ignorance.  I have 1 day to shop for these things so ordering online is not an option.

Also, besides floaties, sunblock, good flip flops, bathing suits, shorts, clothes, - any tips on what to bring that are not totally obvious?  I plan on just having a tote bag and a backpack bc I don't want to check in any luggage, so I'm packing light.

TIA.

Re: Underwater camera? Camera "protector"?

  • I have to rec my new fav sunblock. Neutragena has a aerosol spray that is 70 SPF...It's awesome for easy reapplying for long days in the sun..
  • I would just buy a disposable underwater camera. I think there's cases for point-and-shoot that would protect, but they're pretty expensive.

How long are you on vacation? I admire the fact that you can go on vacation and not check any luggage. For our last 4-day trip to Chicago, my suitcase was over the 50-pound limit. Yep, I'm that girl.

  • methinks you should leave the DSLR at home.  knowing you, you'll break it/lose it/etc.

i don't know if you can find the underwater camera case thingy locally, but i can vouch for the olympus point-and-shoot for being water-resistant as long as you aren't scuba diving with it.

    yay for vacation!

  • You could call them: http://www.samys.com/ to see if they have anything in stock. But I agree with marsh, disposable underwater camera may be the way to go.

    Have fun!

  • Photos from a disposable underwater camera are....well, disposable.

If you have the money, I recommend underwater housing manufactured for your point-and-shoot.  We got great photos with ours in the Great Barrier Reef.

  • Way late here, but I have a underwater case for a Sony camera and it works surprisingly well.
  • Thanks ladies!  I'm super out of time to do major shopping for this, so I'll pop in to Best Buy and see what they've got.
