Hey ladies. Wondering if you can give me any pointers on living in Madison. I'm a San Diego nestie, but used to live in MN.
I'm a nurse and my husband and I are thinking of moving to the Madison area. I've heard good things about the University Hospital. I also have enjoyed the few brief visits to the area. I have a friend who lives in Portage.
Not sure how much it costs to heat a home there anymore, what neighborhoods or towns within 20 minutes of Madison are good or bad. I know it's kind of vague, but any tips on this or nursing there would be appreciated!
Re: Madison info esp. Nurses
Hey!
I think that heating a home depends on if you are buying a new home or an older home. Our home costs a lot to heat, but it is over 25 years old. Plus, I'm always freezing....
As far as towns within 20 minutes, I think they all have their pros and cons. Waunakee and Middleton are very nice, but also cost more. I grew up in DeForest, which is nice but when I was growing up the taxes were awful. Not sure if that's still the case. We have looked at building in Sun Prairie, which is growing like crazy and also Oregon.
My cousin is an Anesthesiologist Assistant at the UW and as far as I know, likes her job. I also have friends that work at Meriter that like it too. My mom has been a nurse for the state for 30 years and definitely can't complain about the pay, benefits etc.
Good luck, and happy moving!
Hello!! I am an RN at UW hospital and I love it. I have been an RN since 2003, but only worked there since 2005. I started out working in their cardiothoracic surgery ICU and loved it!!! I currently work as a Ventricular Assist Device coordinator, which is definitely challenging. They are union if that matters to you. I had never worked at a unionized hospital before, but it really helps. The pay is great. The benefits are great. They also do 100% tuition reimbursement if going for a higher degree is something you are interested in. They have helped me immensely with grad school. There is a lot of room to grow here.
A friend of mine is an L&D RN at Meriter and she really likes it. That is all I can really tell you, though.
We have lived on the West side of madison and currently live in Sun Prairie. We love SP. Our house is 4 years old and is very energy effecient. This year was colder then the last year so costs did go up. Heating costs are completely dependent on the type and age of the home you buy. We lived in an apt on the West side, but didn't like how "urban" it felt to us. The east side is definitely for us. Houses on the east side tend to be less expensive. Plus, my husband works in SP. UW is a 20-30 min commute for me most of the time, depending on traffic.
Please let me know if you have more questions. I hope this helps!!
