Black Tie Wedding Question

Hey ladies... My BIL is getting married in an evening ceremony with a reception at the Four Seasons in October. The invitation says black tie. Does that automatically mean I have to wear a floor length gown? I'm only 5 feet tall and long dress tend to make me look very stumpy. Would something below the knee, perhaps mid-shin, be not formal enough? The dress I'm eyeing is a deep hunter green one shoulder (the shoulder has gold and plum beading and appliques) and it falls about 3 inches below my knee. Does this work?

Sorry for the long explanation!?

Re: Black Tie Wedding Question

  • Hello,

You can wear a dress that is not floor length, just keep in mind it can't be too short and it needs to be evening dress. I went to a wedding last year and it said black tie, i had a floor length dress and i wish i went with my gut feeling and what i liked better then just a regular long dress.

My wedding was back tie and i had couple of people wearing a dress that was up to the knee and it looked great on them.

  • You can def. wear a tea length dress. stick to fabrics like silk or satin. I am 5'1 and wear long dresses all of the time. you can pull off a long dress its all about the cut. You can wear a maxi dress in a solid color or dark tones. I also have a black tie wedding, still haven't checked dresses yet, but bcbg had some good stuff for fall. Worse comes to worse, shop in my closet! lol
  • Hi Lauren :)

I think a tea length dress is definitely appropriate, especially the one you explained.  Beading and appliques are definitely formal.

I think a good way to judge would be to ask yourself if you could wear it to a wedding that wasn't black tie.  Would you feel that it was too dressy for a non-black tie event?  If so, then I think you are good :)

Oh and I totally feel you on the long dresses issue.  I feel so much shorter in a floor length dress!

  • I think you'll be fine. It's tea length, so it's not too short, and the beading sounds so pretty and definelty kicks it up a notch it the formality department. You can also go with some pretty, dramatic eye makeup too!
  • Thanks for all the feedback ladies! I have a 20% off coupon from the store so I think I'll be heading there after work to get that dress. Just needed a little reassurance before making the purchase :)

  • Not neccesarily. A nice fancy coctail dress with nice shoes and jewlery does the trick. I personally hate wearing floor length gowns.
