Trails around Charleston?

Can you recommend any (free) hiking trails that are (leashed) dog friendly around Charleston? The closer to West Ashley, the better :)

TIA!

Re: Trails around Charleston?

  • i've gone on many of the ones at james island county park w/ chance after we spent time at the dog park.  they are nice.  my favorites are around the lake (as seen from the dog park) and the one out to the fishing pier where you can see the stono & the maybank bridge.

there is a nice one in the back of west ashley park past the baseball fields that goes over a bridge onto an island in the middle of the creek back there (the one you can see on glenn mcconnell).  DH took her there a lot in the spring.  when chance was w/ other friends' dogs, she felt comfortable wading into the water there.

the greenway that goes from main rd to windermere is supposed to be a nice gravel path along the marshy waterway.  its 14 miles long and possibly sketchy in some areas friends tell me, but i'd think if you park at one of the ends and do a few miles down and back you should be fine.  i'm planning to take chance once it cools off.

edisto state park has paths that allow leashed dogs but we didn't get out there before summer.  the weather never cooperated on the weekend.

i hear francis marion has good hiking trails.  much of the forest was lost due to hugo but i bet its nice again now.

i like taking walks downtown in the residential areas and explore.  park for free at the battery & walk wherever from there.

our typical walk is up the bike path on hwy 61 from bees ferry to a few neighborhoods past drayton hall elementary.

  • there isn't much "hiking" per se in charleston with mostly flat areas.  the biggest hill is considered the ravenel bridge.

during the off-season i like to walk with chance at the beach too.  i used to go to folly beach near the morris island lighthouse but they just prohibited dogs there now on that end of folly.  i like walking her at kiawah but the sand there seems a little hard for walking barefoot.  the bike paths around kiawah are a good walk too.

hampton park downtown is another place we plan to check out sometime (in broad daylight).

saturdays we often bring her to the farmers market in marion square.  it runs until december.

  • Thanks! Flat areas are fine- I just meant a trail of some sort- so we aren't stepping on snakes or anything! We tried the bike path past Charlestowne Landing last weekend- it wasn't very nice.
