Random Question

If you had family over for the holidays and had made things like chex-mix, chips & salsa, homemade candies, etc. what do you CALL these items? Like, hey family, we're going to have ________ available when you come over.

My MIL calls them "knick-knacks". She uses some interesting terms for a lot of things, but DH and I got into a discussion about this particular  one last night. In the world of my vocabulary, knick-knack = small decorative items that quickly add up to clutter but maybe someone else has heard this food related reference before?

This is all I've got so far this morning Mamie, my apologies.

Re: Random Question

  • A for effort, KB!

I have NEVER heard knick-knacks to describe food. That's so bizarre to me. But they rhyme with snacks... which is what they are.  Confused.

  • My mother and grandmother would call them knick-knacks too.  I think it's mostly because it's a bunch of random snacks that don't really go together but all sounded good at the moment - kind of like decorating with knick-knacks.

I would just call them snacks personally.

  • I have never heard that either!!

I'd say snacks or appetizers or something. I totally agree- to me knick-knacks are small decorative and useless objects.

Never thought of it that way, but definitely makes sense. Thanks!

  • Never heard of that one... if my grandma was cooking, she would call it Christmas dinner.  On Thanksgiving dinner was a turkey and all the fixings, on Christmas "dinner" was tons of different appetizers and junk food.  Never understood that one.
  • If someone told me to come over for knick-knacks, I would assume they were trying to sell me something out of a catalog.

  • This made me laugh so much, thanks! But no I've never heard food refered to as knick nacks, but some of the reasons made sense (and me feel a little bad for laughing so hard). I would just call them snacks.
