We're still using my old full sized bed from 1995. It's from Original Matress Factory and has lasted forever but we just don't have enough room, plus a dog or two always sneaks into the bed during the night. DH usually ends up on the couch or in the spare bedroom most nights- and I want to actually sleep with my hubby! His parents have a queen pillowtop in their guest room and OMG, it's so comfortable! I wish we could trade. So, what size bed do you have, and are any extra creatures (cat, dog, baby, etc) sharing the bed? And any special features, like a pillowtop or a foam topper? Although I must say, I sleep way better when I have the bed all to myself!!
Oh, and we'll probably go to OMF again. We need someone who can do a custom 2 piece boxspring if we get a Queen so we can fit it up our stairs.
Re: Bed help
We have a king. I've had it for 9 years...got it when I was single long before I met my husband. I wouldn't go back to a smaller bed if someone paid me money. Chris is built like an NFL lineman so there really is no option. We would be miserable in a smaller bed - even a queen. When we travel, if the only options are queen and two double beds, we choose the double beds!
Our dog is in the bed before "lights out" but she sleeps on the floor/her chair/crate during the night - not with us. Even a king isn't big enough for the three of us.
So, that doesn't help you since it sounds like you wouldn't be able to get a king mattress up to your room. Definitely, definitely get at least a queen.
We have a queen, which is just fine for us. We usually only let one dog in bed at a time on a 'special attention needed' basis and the dog has to sleep at the foot of the bed between my H's feet. If they creep up higher, they get kicked out of bed.
Sometimes with the dog in bed, I wish we had a king - but then when we stay in hotels in a king, I feel like we're an ocean apart from each other.
We have a queen tempur-pedic. I'm ready for the day when we upgrade to a king! Ha Ha. It's just us two (our pups are crated at night) so we still have plenty of room. Our honeymoon bed is what sold us on a king! We just prefer all the extra space, for no good reason
I will say we slept on a twin @ his parents....somehow we made it work
I think the size is just a personal preference. I would go all out & get a king!
DH and I went from a Queen to a King about 3 years ago and it was the best decision EVER! I truely believe it saved our marriage...ha! We have a tiny 3lb dog that sleeps in between my legs or along my side depending on how I am laying that night and then we have two 20lb cats that sometimes get in the bed too. Normally it's just the 1 cat with us, but sometimes the other comes in too.
Anyway... even though we have a King I still get about 2 feet of the bed along my side! Dh likes to lay pretty much sideways and a Queen just was not big enough. We have a double pillow top and it is oh-so comfy!! LOVE IT. Plus, a King boxspring comes in 2 pieces so it would be easy to get upstairs, the mattress is flexible.
There's definitely enough room for all three of us, but it is sometimes funny. I'll wake up (or DH) and the two of us are all squished together on one side of the bed, while the cat is stretched out all over the other side. LOL.
We upgraded to a king three years ago, and I don't know why we didn't do it sooner. Even with the king I still get squished into the corner, between DH (who's a big guy) and 2-4 cats (we kick the cats on on work nights, but they love sleeping with us on the weekends)
The split box spring on a king might work out for you too--like PP said, the mattress is flexible, so you may be able to make it work.
one of my co-workers recently shared her bad experiences with tempurpedic (sp? the foam mattress) and the sleep number bed...kind of turned me off those. Though another friend swears by his foam mattress.
The Fluffy Cat says... "Boxes are the best toys ever invented!"
Actually I do think we could get a king up the stairs b/c the box springs are always split and the matresses have more bend than a Queen. I'm not sure we have enought uninterrupted wall space for a king though-we're going to have to block a window with something that big!
And I swear, our next round of dogs will NEVER sleep in the bed. I say that but in 10 years I'll probably have a couple of dogs and a kid or two in bed with me and dh will still be on the couch. Then again there won't be a kid if dh is still on the couch!
We have a queen bed with a pillow top. Our older dog has slept in bed for a while which was OK since he slept by the DH's legs. Now, our 2nd dog (6 mos. old) just got big enough to make it into bed. Since this has happened I'm DYING to get a King. I need a lot of space when I sleep and the current set up is not working for me.
This might be slightly off topic, but I'd love to transition the dogs OUT of bed. Anybody successfully make that happen?? Nothing like a 100 pound dog licking your face to kill the mood.
DH and I had a queen bed until about 3 weeks ago. We just got a king from Mattress Firm and it's great! It is a pillow top. We aren't using box springs for it, since it would have made the bed too high for our furniture. So we have two bunkie boards (are the size of an extra long twin size).
We were worried the king wouldn't fit up the staires, but were happy to know that king mattress can basically bend in the middle to help them go up tight spaces (which ours is). The movers made the comment that they couldn't beleive we were able to get a queen size box springs up (we almost didn't). So I understand needing custom box springs so they can get upstaires.
ETA: It's just DH and I in the bed. We don't have any pets (yet), but will be getting a dog soon
The plan is for the dog to sleep in a crate for probably at least a year after we get it, and then a dog bed on the floor in our room. It won't be in our bed, I have enough trouble sleeping without a puppy in it. I had a dog in high school at my parents, she slept in my bed for a couple years, then on the floor.
