Baltimore Nestie with a Question :-)

hi ladies!

One of DH's good friends is starting her fellowship at Wash U. and is about move to St. Louis (well, in August).  We're planning a trip out to visit in mid-September - when the Giants play the Rams, they're Jersey people lol - and I just wanted to get a feel for the public transportation in the city.  Do we need to rent a car?  She'll have one out there, but we'll be on our own while she's at work for a day or two and we wanted to explore the city a bit. Can we do this via the public transportation (I'm a really cheesy tourist - I like to see all the tourist hotspots!) or would that be a PITA??

Just trying to plan ahead!  Oh, and if you have any "must-sees" in St. Louis please share!  Thanks for the help!

Re: Baltimore Nestie with a Question :-)

  • We have the Metro-link which goes to the downtown hotspots-Arch, Landing, Busch Stadium, Edward Jones Dome. However, if you are going to go to the Anheuser Busch Brewery, Zoo or anywhere like that, you'll want a car as our attractions can be pretty spread out.

I can say that we are lucky in that parking is usually never a big issue, so you can always park and walk around to explore.

Hope you have a good trip!

  • I think you will definately need a car.  The big attractions are spread out and our metro link doesn't reach them all.  Good Luck!
  • If you're staying in the city - or around the city and you don't mind walking you can get around on metro link or metro bus. Most people in Saint Louis when you say public transporation think "metrolink" which is our rail system. That will get you in and around the City, but not much more. However, what most forget is our metro bus (run by same system) and that is fairly reliable and goes all over the Saint Louis area.  Their website is:     http://www.metrostlouis.org/

IMO, Metro in general is fairly reliable, and most of the college students I work with take it everywhere and have been perfectly fine with it.  However, most Saint Louisans don't have the patience to wait for the bus or walk to the nearest bus stop and wait for the bus to come.....so they drive, we have WAAAY too many drivers in the Saint Louis area.  The metro bus WILL take you all over the city - so that IS an option...if you want it. However, if you're not one who wants to walk a few blocks or wait for a bus, then I'd recommend getting a car to go where ever you need to go.

Personally, I'm a spoiled, I want my car type of gal, so I would rent a car...but if I was tight on my budget and I had time, then i'd look into the metro website and take the bus - it's reliable and it is MUCH cheaper than renting a car!!!

    Good luck!

  • Jennie makes a good point about metrobus - I always forget about it as an option when I think of public transportation around the area.  I'm spoiled too though and I would want a car given that parking really isn't much of an issue with our attractions.  As far as a must do, I really like AB Brewery Tour.  The AB Brewery is a little south of the downtown core - at highway 55 and Arsenal.  It happens to be up the street from where we live so I am probably a little biased!

Enjoy your time here!  Given the time of year that you are coming, it might be fun to go to a winery for the day.  There are quite a few vineyards to choose from.  Most are about an hour west of the city (in Hermann and Augusta) or south (in Ste. Genevieve).  I personally like Mount Pleasant and Crown Valley, but there are a lot of good ones!

I'm not really a lush - but I just realized that I recommended a beer tour and a trip to the winery in the same post!

  • Altough we have metrolink and metrobus, they aren't always practical.  Metrobus may require you to switch buses half a dozen times to get where you're going so it's usually better to rent a car if you plan on going places outside of the downtown area.  However if you're staying downtown and spending most of the time downtown, then you shouldn't need to rent a car.  Ride the "link" or walk.

As far as attractions, Saint Louisans are fortunate enough to have most of our tourist activites free.  My DH and I are really into doing to little goofy things that tourist do but most people that live here don't.  The one place I think really should be visited is the Delmar Loop, which is conviently located a few blocks from Wash U.

Here is a link to the article in the May 08 issue of StL Mag which lists the 101 things every Saint Louisan needs to do --
