Prison Dog Project

I just saw this on Animal Planet and think it's a great idea!

They take rescued dogs that are abandoned and place them with inmates to foster them.  The inmates have to groom the dogs daily, train them, take care of them until they are adopted.  Some of these guys are in there for life and have gone through over 10 dogs.  Some of them even train dogs that were bred to be service dogs for blind/deaf people.  The program is really for the benefit of the dogs.  But I think the inmates learn to be more responsible and how to actually take care of something.

Re: Prison Dog Project

  • That is awesome.  I agree I think that its great for them to learn compassion, responsibility
  • I've seen that show!  I think it's a great program for the doggies and the inmates. :)
  • I have never seen the show but it sounds really interesting - looks like a great program.
When life hands you a bunch of lemons, make lemonade-call me over and I'll bring the tequila and salt!
  • Oprah did a show on this last season. In her show they had shown a dog that was trained and then went to a solider that just came back from Iraq and he had a lot of psychological programs after the war and the dog would help him snap out of those and be more calm.

I think its a great idea too.
