XP with The Knot: Visiting LA in November

DH and I will be in the Los Angeles area Nov. 5 - 8 to see the Breeder's Cup at Santa Anita. All of the hotels around the race track are booked (Arcadia, Pasadena, Monrovia). Frankly, I wouldn't mind not staying out there but instead in a more interesting area of LA and then driving to the race track as needed (we'll have a rental car).

I've been to LA and stayed right in Hollywood. DH was there years ago so doesn't really remember it. I would love to see some sites in LA while we're there in between horse racing (like I haven't seen Venice Beach or any of the coast).

Is there a hotel or a neighborhood you'd recommend for us to stay in?

I'm all about local or unique places or BBs vs. just another Hampton Inn. This week long trip which includes a stint in Vegas and then back to LA Nov. 11 - 13 for opening day at Hollwood Park (I think we're staying in Newport Beach then) is for our one year anniversary.  Funny how it is all tied to horseracing!? Smile

I would so appreciate any ideas. Thanks so much!

  • If you're up for driving you might like Hermosa Beach or Manhattan Beach. It's a bit of a trek from that side of town but it's a great little area and beautiful beaches. Sorry- no hotel recs that I can think of.
  • If you can get a decent rate, stay at SHADE in Manhattan Beach.  You can walk throughout town so you don't have to worry about beach parking.  It's a cute town-  lots of good shopping and eating.

If the price is too high, the Belamar in Manhattan Beach is an option.  It's on a busy main street which would be a drawback.

If you follow Travelzoo, there's often great prices in Beverly Hills.  A few favorites that offer good rates include The Crescent (right now TZ has it at 119 for certain night).  I really like Maison 140 in BH.

  • You could try Santa Monica as well, that would be close to the pier, 3rd street promenade, venice beach and malibu.  Don't have any specific recs though.
