S/O Breast Pumps

For those of you who have used them or plan to, which one did you get and why?

FWIW, I am thinking I want the Medela Freestyle since it's highly rated and smaller/more convenient than the Pump 'n' Style.

Re: S/O Breast Pumps

  • EVERYONE I have talked to swears by the Pump in Style Advanced. Friends of mine who have had babies all said to get that one. The nurse who taught our birth class said that one. Our pediatrician said that one. The bf class said that one. So.... That's why. But definitely ask around and see what you think. That one looks good too, it's just that everyone overwhelmingly said PISA.

  • I have heard many like PISA too, but the FreeStyle is fairly new and a little more expensive, so I think less women have actually used it.  In online forums and reviews though, moms who have used both say they prefer the FreeStyle (more portable, easier to carry and use).  I need something I can bring to/from work every day as well as take with my on business trips, so portability is key.
  • do you have any local shops that sell and rent a wide range of them?  I bet they would be happy to show you all the models and give you some reviews and let you actually see the models?

  • I have the Medela PISA.  Everyone I talked to told me to stick with Medela if I was going to be pumping at work.
  • I have the medela pis sdvanced in the messanger bag. I LOVE it because the motor is able to come out of the bag so when we travel I put it and all the parts in my checked luggage. My friend gave it to me because she was not able to pump with her baby. She  said she got it because it's alot easier then having to carry around one more bag when traveling. You will already have the baby bag and your carryon. So taking the bump in the backpack or the other option is just one more thing to carry. I don't know if the motor is removable from the bag with the free style, so you might want to check on that..
  • Lori I gave the PISA in the backpack. I LOVE it. I looked at the freestyle but its so small I wondered about it breaking easier... I got the PISA because I got it for much cheaper at my work and read great reviews. I ended up with the backpack (its pretty small) because my friend had the messenger bag and said she wished she would've got the backpack. There's enough room in the backpack to store some storage bags, snacks for me and a few other small things.
  • I used the Medela Swing but I'm annoyed right now because the engine seems to have gone gahhhhh about 3 mths ago. It's making deep, slow grinding sick noises and won't work now. So...instead of a $300 pump lasting at least TWO kids...looks like I have to fork out hundreds for ANOTHER bloody pump :|

The Swing did the job though, while it DID work. I had no real complaints. Though, gotta say that I LOVED the hospital grade Medela Swing...just haven't got the $$$ for that particular one.

The others, I haven't tried, so can't give you any review. Would you consider renting one for a week, trying it and then renting the other to compare and work out which one you prefer?

  • Also, not sure if you're buying before or after bubby is born but my advice is to wait until after bub is born. Rent one of the pumps you're considering and have it ready at home for when you and baby return from the hospital.

Reason I say that is: see how breastfeeding goes for you. If it works out and you get b/f'ing established then go for it and buy the pump you like. If it doesn't work out and you decide to formula-feed your baby, then the most you've spent dollar-wise is the cost of the rental for a week or two.

we didn't buy one until I knew Bella would BF without probs. One of my friend's bought one and her LO wouludn't latch at all! She decided it was too much work to pump and give bottles all the time so she basically wasted $250 on a pump... so waiting is good advice!
