St. Francis vs. Manchester Hospital

Hello,

My Dr. practices from St. Francis and had told me care at Manchester was not as good or up to date on care. I am thinking of getting a doula and the woman from the doula center told me St. Francis is not as good. Then I read news article about how St. Fran. was undergoing a complete investigation for malpractice. What's the deal?? Do I not listen to my Dr.? If I want to deliver at Manchester, which does offer water birthing and hypno-birthing ,I have to dump my Dr. mid pregnancy. Can someone share good and bad experiances from either hospital?

Re: St. Francis vs. Manchester Hospital

  • I don't know from personal experience, but I have a few relatives that have delivered at both hospitals and I can share their experiences.  The one who delivered at St. Francis (just this past March) was impressed with the care on the birthing side, but was very disappointed in their postpartum care and assistance once out of the labor and delivery side of things.  The mothers I know that delivered at Manchester had nothing but good things to say, but their deliveries were several years ago (one had all 3 of her children there).  We opted to go with Hartford Hospital when we had a choice between them and St. Francis.

  • Hi,

I delivered Kimberly on April 5, 2009 at St. Francis. I chose it because of my doctor. I looked into a dual, but did not opt for it for the cost; in retrospect, I did not need one as the delivery nurse was excellent. I wanted to do a completely natural birth, but the pain made me go for an Epi at 5cm. The delivery team was great!

However, postpardom was terrible! I delivered on a Sunday night and I was supposed to have received consultations from a lactation consultatn on the Monday. Nobody showed up and so no help and no clue what I am doing and I was in so much pain because my Kimberly decided to come with both shoulders at once! The nurses were ok, not great, one good and the rest, no help! They did stuff for me or contradicted each other all the time and so I was really confused and upset. The second day, 5 hours before my discharge, I got 15 minutes to learn about breat feeding. They would not send anyone out to the home and other services I looked into said no one could come to my home since I had delivered at St. Francis. I ended up paying for a lactation consultant who along with several other women I spoke with including a massage therapist and nurse said Manhcester was better. The visiting nurse said I should have delivered at UCon as that is where she made sure her daughter delivered. Sorry for the length, but feel so strongly that I would not deliver at St. Francis again. HTH
