So, it's a personal goal of mine to start blogging on the reg again, since it's something I love to do. However, I am at a loss on how to proceed with this.
I had a blog for many years that started out anonymous, but turned pretty popular. I made tons of friends from it, had loads of followers/comments, and I really had a great time with it. Two things ruined this blog for me. 1) MH was recognized and approached by a creepy random while he was out with his friends once and 2) MH's friend's wife found the blog and used stuff I said on there against me, basically making all of his friends hate me and think I was a ***. That blog has never been the same for me.
I started a blog on blogger, but made it private. The only people who had access to it were a handful of Nesties. I stopped updating this one in January-ish when my home internet was giving me issues and making uploading pictures almost impossible. I have since fixed the internet issues, but I haven't really felt like updating that one.
I have my book blog, which I really like and update frequently, but I want something more personal.
So, what should I do here?
These are my issues...
#1 - I am a high school teacher. Having an internet presence is a tricky proposition. (Which SUCKS because I like my internet life more than I like my IRL life.)
#2 - I don't want my blog to be totally superficial, because part of the reason I want to get back to doing it is for the journaling aspect of it.
#3 - I don't want it to be totally private / anonymous, because part of the fun of blogging is getting feedback.
I feel like it's kinda impossible to get out of a blog what I want to get out of it (what I got out of my original blog back in its heyday), but I thought maybe you guys might have some ideas for me.
Re: POLL: What should I do with my blog?
Yeah, that's my problem...I like to post pictures.
I feel like this is a totally impossible problem.
I used to be very honest in my blogging back in the days, but as I got older (and as blogging in general became more popular) I began censoring myself more and more. I'm always paranoid that my co-workers / clients / distant friends / family / in-laws will find it and learn things that I don't intend for them to find out. So nowadays I generally only talk about the happy stuff on my blog and what I do on the weekends. So lame. I don't talk about my feelings / viewpoints at all, which is something I miss from my college blogging days (but I should mention that back then only two people read it).
Anyway, I think that being a high school teacher pretty much means you can only write about stuff that are ok for your students / their parents / your colleagues to read. Alternatively, you can make it absolutely anonymous and never post any pictures / stories that can be tied back to you. But then, it won't be so much fun :
Well, you know my story. I continue to post photos and some personal info, but I rarely get emo anymore. And, as always, I don't reference people by their real names unless they use their real names on the Internet already.
It's me, but not all of me. It's Me Lite.
this was such a dilemma for me a while ago. i've been blogging for almost three years now, but had to mostly keep it quiet because the hub was completely against it. we had a huge blowup about it a few months ago, and since then i've been able to take pictures and be more open about it around him, which is good. he reads it more often now, and i've promised to keep him out of it as much as possible, which has mollified him somewhat.
i do a lot of food posts nowadays. i still get a little personal and emo now and then, but for the most part my IRL woes and worries are kept private. and i still use no real names for anyone.
I have had a blog on Livejournal for about 5 years. I hardly ever post in it, but the thing that I do like about LJ is that you can control who sees your posts - anything from public, to "friends only" to custom groups of selected people, to private/only for yourself.
The thing that kind of sucks about LJ is that it's a separate membership/you have to have an account (free) in order to become "friends" and such. So that would require your readers to commit to you. Overall it's worth it for the privacy features.
I have the same dilema. I decided to use mine for journaling purposes but having it open meant I had to keep it light on juicy drama. It does make for a more boring blog and I have actually considered having a completely separate blog for my ranting that is private.
I do miss being able to blog about things that irritate me. For instance this weekend.....I could post a real doozy but can't because of my readers. Could you have TWO blogs? One private and one Open?
I feel ya though. I wish I had better advice.
