What do you think about Obama's speech to students?

I am amazed that this has been so controversial.  I can't imagine how anyone would read this speech  to have a political message that the Prez is trying to send our students.  The only messages I read were that students should put down the video games and study harder.  That things don't just "happen", you have to work for them.

How could anyone have a problem with sending that message to students??  Am I missing something? I don't get it.

I don't get it either! When last week, I heard some rumor about a controversial speech to students, I was like "oh no, what did President Obama say?" Only to find out that he had not yet even given the speech!! I can't understand some people. Many presidents have in the past given speeches to school kids, so what's the big deal?!?!

My impression was that a few narrow-minded conservative discontents got puffed up about the idea of it, for no logically rational reason, and the media latched onto it as an actual story with sad desperation. Did they really think he was going to address a bunch of school kids and indoctrinate them with his personal political positions?

I did not vote for the guy and disagree with a great many of his ideas, but I have to say I don't really get the controversy around this.  The speech as published is pretty non-political.  And anyway, there is certainly precedent for a POTUS doing something like this, it's not like he's the first. *shrug*

It honestly irked me that anyone would be opposed to a "pep" talk from the president.  I asked some students today what they thought and they were actually impressed that the president would care to address young students as if to say, "you have the responsibility and you are important."
