Childcare costs

Can anyone give me an idea of what I am looking at for childcare costs?  We just found out there is a baby on the way and I know this will be the largest expense once he or she is here.  Also, if anyone has any good recommendations for people in overland park/leawood/olathe area that would be awesome.  Thanks!

  • Thank you very much.  We are so excited but this childcare thing seems so daunting.  Ugh!

  • No idea, but congrats! I would start asking coworkers and friends where they go. Infants can get expensive ($160/wk and up) but they start to get less expensive as they slowly learn to walk. We're in Topeka, so we're not in Leawood, but we (will) pay $60/wk for part-time care for the daycare run by my university.

  • Wow, $60 a week would be so nice but I know I won't have any such luck.  Now I'm beginning to understand why so many people say that it isn't even worth working.

  • Hey!  Congrats on the pregnancy!  We are in Olathe, and DD (who's now 2!) goes to an in-home center.  It is $150/week for us, and the least expensive we found.  Some places wanted $1200+ for a month...which is more than our house payment!!  I decided to go the in-home route so DD would be in a smaller, closer-knit environment, and it was more affordable.  I found our lady by going to www.childcaresource.org and typing in my specifications.  That gave me a list of names and phone numbers, and then I reverse looked-up all the numbers to find who was closest to me, and then called, and set up some interviews.  It can get stressful, so start early!!  You're right though...if DD would have been twins, I would not have gone back to work, especially because I commute to Lawrence daily.  Best of luck, & congrats again!
  • I don't, but I want to say congrats!
  • We currently pay $170 a week, but Owen will be changing daycares in the fall (I am a teacher and am changing districts) and his new one is $195  week.  Ugh.
  • We use a in-home and for my 6 month old its $115 a week and my 2 year old is $95 but thats in Edwardsville, KS
  • I keep hoping my mom will fall so in love with the little one that she will decide to stay home, but I doubt that will happen because she basically works so she can shop, and enjoys shopping too much. lol.  I guess I didn't realize just how much of a financial burden that is.  Good thing we have started saving early to make up for some of the added expense!

  • I live in Olathe and work in Lenexa.  Lenexa will run around $200/week or $50/day for in-home daycare.  Olathe will run arouns $160/week or $40/day for in-home daycare.  I have a daycare provider that is $140/week.  She cannot accept anymore children until March, is that okay?  She is at 123rd and Iowa.  Let me know if you need her email.  Good luck and congrats!

  • Thanks for that info.  The baby isn't due until mid February and unfortunately that isn't in my area or even just a little out of the way.  I'll keep it in mind though because I am hoping to get a promotion before the baby arrives and that could land me in that area and if it did I would love her info.  Thanks!

  • Congrats on the new pregnancy, it is a very exciting time! I live in LS so I dont have too many recs, but I know that there is a Primrose in Leawood (same as my school I teach kindergarten at in LS) and they start taking babies at 6 weeks. Primrose has very high standards and is a school I wouldnt have to think twice about sending my own child to. It is pricey however, an infant full time runs about $240 a week. They are open from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm and all staff has a backgroung check done yearly and upon hire. Check out www.primroseschools.com

    Good luck and congrats again.
