This ANNOYS me so much too! Ever since they did that early check in it's just made things worse as now everyone and their mother sits at the computer to check in at exactly 24 hours ahead.
I've never flown Southwest but I find this VERY odd. I would HATE to fly on an airline where I couldn't pick my own seats. What happens when ur flying with someone?

well you arn't guarenteed to sit with your travel buddy. I've had this happen several times. it sucks. you really have to check in early in order to be in the A group so you can board first and sit with your companion.
The first 1-25 or so (depending on how big of a plane it is--I think) are reserved for their business people, or whatever they call it.
But that's still crazy that you were #52! Yikes!
I've heard today, that southwest now has an option that if you pay $10 more, that they will assign your seat (or number) to you 3 days prior too... but at that, you still arent guarenteed an A group...
I LOVE continental. That is what I used to fly back to Maine today. I had to pay for luggage, but got a free breakfast and an inflight movie! I think I am going to fly with them more often now!
