PSA: Loan Forgiveness

Hey girls,

In September of 2007 new legislation passed on a Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. Essentially if you work in a public service field for 10 years and make 10 years of on time payments the REMAINDER of your loan is FORGIVEN! This may sound like a long time, but it's GREAT.

I consolidated my loans for 25 years (since you have to make payments I wanted to have the minimum payment, to ensure I'd make it each month) and would not finish paying until the end of 2029. With this new legislation I can pay off my student loans by the end of 2019! That's 10 years off of payments!

Now, the program is only offered through Federal Direct Consolidation Loans. If you already consolidated it's not a problem! I will be transferring my debt with Citi Loans to Federal Direct. They also said that my interest rate would be guaranteed as well. I'll be doing the switch next month.

For detailed information on the program go to http://www.finaid.org/loans/publicservice.phtml
