Did you/are you/will you avoid these things while TTC? If so, how long (i.e. before ttc, the whole time trying or just during the tww)? If not, how much did you do each during ttc? Or, if you did something different, please tell.

Alcohol?

Caffeine?

Eating certain foods?

Hair color?

Baths?

Exercise?

Anything else noteworthy?

Re: Poll: Avoiding while TTC

  • To answer my own poll:

Alcohol? I don't drink much, but won't at all after CD 1 of my first ttc cycle.

Caffeine? I don't drink much caffeine anymore, but my Fertili.tea has some green tea in it and I plan to drink that until a BFP.

Eating certain foods? I've begun avoiding tuna (but take fish oils daily). Otherwise no plans to avoid anything specific.

Hair color? This is the one I'm unsure about. I currently have blond hightlights growing out and want to get my hair cut and colored. I'm thinking of going slightly darker all over to avoid bleaching. I think I need to do some research on this. Anyone have any info?

Baths? I don't really take baths, but when I do I enjoy them. I know some women avoid while ttc and pregnant. Maybe I should take one soon to enjoy it before starting...

Exercise? I plan to keep up my moderate exercise a few days a week, but not start anything new.

Anything else noteworthy? Nothing that I know of. Should I be?

Alcohol?   Didn't avoid until very end of tww... literally like a day or two before I was going to test. I didn't drink much anyway, a glass of wine or cocktail here or there. You don't share anything with the babe at that point so I saw no reason to not allow myself that glass of wine with dinner or friends.

Caffeine?   I also didn't really do caffeine pre-baby/ttc because of some previous heart issues, so I didn't change these habits either. I was already well below what docs say is fine for pregnancy.

Eating certain foods?  Didn't avoid or change a thing.

Hair color?   Don't color my hair, but they now say its fine even in pregnancy... so if I did color, I would have kept coloring.

Baths?   I shower normally, but if I felt like a bath I wouldn't have avoided it.

Exercise?   Kept exercising as normal. Exercise is great for you while TTC and pregnant.

Anything else noteworthy?   I tried to avoid extra stress, and get lots of good sleep. I was religious with my vitamins, and did my best to eat well. But the fact of the matter is, you are going to do more harm during TTC with stressing yourself out then you are with most things you can eat or drink (aside from drugs, obviously). If it makes you feel better to avoid things, then do so for peace of mind... but if you are going to stress about it, then I 100% believe that you are doing more harm then good.

  • Alcohol? Just avoided it during the TWW (well, all but the last cycle. the one I got pregnant (we were on vacation and I decided to throw caution to the wind and have a beer while overlooking the ocean.)  When I talked to the doctor about it, he said he tells patients it is okay to "drink till it's pink."

Caffeine? Didn't really avoid - but I don't drink much of it any way (typically decaf tea and the occasional diet coke.)

    Eating certain foods? No

Hair color? don't do this anyway

Baths? I am a shower girl

Exercise? Well....I don't do this much to begin with.

Anything else noteworthy? Sex during the TWW (prometrium. YUCK.)

  • Alcohol? I drank during the 2ww.  I know there are others that will judge but this is what worked for me.  I never got drunk.  In all it was maybe 4 drinks in a 2 week period. And I stopped by 10dpiui just in case something had implanted.

Caffeine? I gave up during the 2ww and have only had 1 halfcaf latte since getting the BFP (actually this past Tuesday)

Eating certain foods? I didn't avoid anything during the 2ww

Hair color? The only reason I didn't dye it is because I knew once I did become pregnant I probably wouldn't keep up with it. This way the roots could start to grow out well in time for the wedding I'm in next month.

Baths? Didn't take any but not on purpose.

Exercise? Unfortunately I don't exercise as regularly as I should.  As far as basic physical activity I kept everything the same.  I walk the dogs, mow the lawn, etc.  I don't lift heavy things anymore and I'll take more breaks when doing yard work.

Anything else noteworthy? Not really.  For me the whole thing was about trying to keep life as normal as possible.

  • Alcohol? I didn't have any alcohol during the tww, but had some during the first part of my cycles (I'm not much of a drinker anyway).

Caffeine? I avoided caffeine during the tww, but my RE said I could have a cup of coffee a day if I wanted to (I haven't, though).

Eating certain foods? I mostly tried/try to just eat well. The only foods I've specifically cut out (starting with the tww) are artificial sweeteners. I also try to not eat a lot of foods with freaky chemicals in them, and have gone mostly organic for fruits (I eat a lot of fruit).

Hair color? Sorta n/a-- I don't color my hair. I used to help S dye her hair, but now she does it on her own so I don't breathe the fumes.

Baths? I'm a shower person... it's been several years since my last bath, lol. I would have avoided hot tubs during the tww, though, if I'd ever been around one...

Exercise? I exercised regularly during my cycles, but took it easy during the twws. I was planning to get back to exercising regularly mid-way through the first trimester, but when the bleeding started my RE put me on exercise restriction (no "intentional" exercise; only walk if I have to actually get somewhere and no running).

I've forgotten twice. Once I ran about a hundred feet, and once I walked up (and back down) a flight of stairs. Both times I had increased red bleeding the next day, so now I really try to remember.

Anything else noteworthy? Um...sex? (TMI alert!) I haven't had an orgasm since before our IUI on July 4th. At first it was because we opted to abstain during our tww (this cycle; we hadn't in past cycles) because I read something about Os hindering implantation, but then when the bleeding started I was put on pelvic rest, so I haven't had a choice.

I may try to see if I can be let off restriction when we see the MFMs tomorrow. But of course I am more than happy to do whatever is best for the babies.

I also try to stay away from strong chemicals in household cleaners.

  • Alcohol? - yes. But I was never really a drinker anyway. I stopped drinking as soon as we started TTC and didn't have my first drink until about a month ago? I feel weird about drinking while BFing.

Caffeine? -yes. But I always avoid caffeine.

    Eating certain foods? -nope

Hair color? -I don't colour my hair

Baths? -nope. I had really bad hip pain when pregnant and baths were the only thing that helped. I bathed every day. Sometimes twice a day. I just didn't make them too hot and I would check my temperature periodically as I read that as long as your core temperature doesn't reach a certain point, you're fine.

Exercise? -nope, I exercised a normal amount. Which isn't saying much since I don't really exercise a whole lot.

Anything else noteworthy? - not that I can think of...
