9/11

Can you believe it was 8 years ago?  What were you doing on that day?

I was in Ireland on a high school study abroad program.  Our principal came on the speaker system and said this would be a day we would never forget.  I didn't really understand the magnitude of what happened when I was in Ireland.  When I flew back home and into New York six months later and did not see the towers and saw all of the American flags everywhere is when it hit me how devestating it was.

  • Embarassingly, I was lying in a tanning bed. I used to go tanning for 20 min before work while I was in college and listen to the radio .. grab a cup of coffee and head to work.. I walked out of the "tanning bed room" into a flurry of people everywhere and lots of worry. :(

    8 years... wow...

  • I was in my dorm room sleeping because I had just gotten off work at 6am.  My friend called me and told me to turn on the news.  Soon after that we had a phone recall.  I was active duty at the time.

  • I was in my college apartment in CA. As soon as I woke up my roommate said that she thinks we we're having WW III. I spent most of the morning and afternoon glued to the tv. We both didn't go to class that day. I picked up my bf (DH now) and brought him back to my apt. I was afraid that SF would be a target, and I wanted us to be as far just in case. All the footage was insane. I can't believe it's been almost 10 years.
  • I had just crawled back into bed in my dorm room (I'd spent the night at Matt's apartment Surprise ) and my phone started ringing.  It was Matt calling me to tell me about the first plane & to turn on the television.  I did, and saw the second one hit.

I had class at 1 that afternoon, but our teacher cancelled.  I spent the day watching tv with my crazy ass roommate, and as soon as Matt got off of work, I had him come get me - I was really scared to be in a tall (20 story) building in a big city.  We went back to his apartment and watched coverage until we couldn't keep our eyes open anymore.

  • It was my first year of teaching and since it was the 11th of September it was at the very beginning of the school year. I remember that we went into emergency mode and kept all of the classroom doors locked, went to the bathroom as classrooms, and didn't go outside for recess. Some parents came to pick up their kids. It was hard remaining calm and answering the kids' questions when we didn't know what was going on ourselves.

  • I was doing my student teaching at a high school.  The secretary came in to our office and told us.  I remember having to translate what was happening to a new Spanish-speaking student.  It was all so bizzare and surreal, I couldn't believe it was happening.  I called my dad who travels a lot for business (planes) and my BF (now hubby).  I remember being so happy to go home after that day.
