Was I wrong?????

So I was at Home Depot and I came out and next to me there was a car with the front drivers and front passengers windows rolled down maybe 1/2 an inch. And there was a dog in the back seat. A little thing panting away. So I sat there for like 5 mins and this other car pulled in and I asked them what i should do. The guy said he would go in and talk to the front desk. Someone came out and was basically like there is nothing we can do because we are employees. What???? So I called the police. I gave the license plate number and then while me and the older couple were waiting the owners came out. I was like "We just called the police because it has been at least 20 mins that your dog ahs been in the car" They were this hoity toity couple and they were like "OOOH a whole 20 mins". I said "Are you kidding me it is 90 degrees out, hey you want to kill your dog go right ahead, but I am not going to witness it". And they got in their car and drove away. I am not a dog owner would you leave your dog in the car with the windows rolled 1/2 in down in this heat???

Re: Was I wrong?????

  • Wow, I would have FLIPPED. They sound like complete a$$es who should not own animals and its too bad they came back before the police. I seriously have NO patience for that kind of neglect.
  • I don't think you were wrong, those people were pretty ignorant to do that (especially at Home Depot, where a small dog might have even been able to ride in the cart and hang out with them for a few minutes instead of being hot and dehydrated in the car)
  • You were not wrong!  In fact, I did the same thing on Sunday.  A guy left a dog in his truck while he took his kid in to see a movie.  I was feeding Charlotte in the parking lot and he didn't come back out after 20+ minutes so Evan went in a spoke with the manager.  It's way too hot out for that!  I don't think this guy even left a window cracked!

  • personally, I think you KICK SOME SERIOUS BOOTY for calling the cops... you did the right thing!!!

A man left his dog in the car at Home Depot last year in sweltering heat, and the dog died, and criminal charges were brought against him, it's animal cruelty...

People like that shouldn't have pets!!!!!!!!!!

  • I would never leave my dog in the car unless I was in it with him and we had the AC on. That is ridiculous! I probably would have said something less nice to them.
  • I would never, ever, ever leave my dog in a car in this heat. The few times we have been out in 90+ degree weather with the dog, one of us stayed in the car. You were NOT wrong!! They are obviously morons! At it may be 90 outside, but in that car, I believe the temp can spike higher than that!
  • I called the cops the other day at walmart. There was a mini van running with the windows up on Monday (remember how hot it was!?) and I gave it a second glance and noticed there was 3 kids (that I could see) in the car.. included a TODDLER IN A CAR SEAT!! So I went in and asked the greeter if he could call someone. He said to me and I quote " If the car is running the AC is probably on, I cant leave my post" Like he was guarding the United States or something. I was furious so I went over to the customer service and of course, it was a million people deep. So I went back outside, its been a good five minutes now, and there were a couple woman walking in, so I asked them if I was overacting, because I was about to call the cops. They said absolutely not, they would do the same. I called and gave the info to the dispatcher and they were in the parking lot in about 2 minutes. The cop got out and knocked on the windows and then the father walked out. The cop shook his hand and went on his way. I was so mad. Not only was it the hottest day, but there were little kids, so much could have happened. The car was running, God  forbid they decide to fool around and get the car moving. Or someone hit them?!?!? It makes me so sick. I dont care how quick you are going to be, or how much of a hassle it is to take your kids in the store... DONT LEAVE YOUNG KIDS IN A CAR UNATTENDED. If its that much trouble, freaking leave them with a babysitter.

Why are people such dipshits?!?!?! Good for you!!!!!

  • you  were absolutly right.  We don't take Faith anywhere if we have to leave her  in the car for any period of time.

  • I would have done the same thing....I would never leave my dog alone in a car anyways for fear someone would take him! If I bring him out it is to places he can come with me like the vet, pet stores or park or something. You did the right thing... people can be so selfish, especially ones that think their sh!t doesn't stink.
  • Good for you!!!
  • I totally agree with what you did - you did the right thing.  However, I would not be so courageous as to call the police - I am a coward that way.  Good for you!!
  • Good for you!! ?You def made the right choice!
  • I would have done the same thing! Good for you Sue!
  • Weird you should mention this, because I literally just did the same exact thing yesterday when it was 105 degrees outside. I walked outside of my office and saw a Jeep with it's windows only rolled down an inch, if that with a dog in a crate! I waited 5 minutes, and then finally I called the police, gave them the liscense plate number and told them that the dog must be borderline dying by now because it was sooo hot! I felt soo bad for the little dog! I am glad you did what you did! It's not fair. How would they like to sit in the car in the heat like that with no air?!
  • You were RIGHT.  A dog should not be left in a car for more than 5 minutes in this kind of heat unless the windows are down ALL the way.  I'm really glad you called the police, and you should be proud of yourself for doing the right thing.
  • Im  surprised the clerks wouldnt call the police. At Shaws I called the police all the time for that. They broke many a window.

One time they did it with a kid in the car too. Kids need air too apparently.

  • I agree with Punken13, we never take our dog anywhere if we have to leave him in the car for more than a minute.  I think you did the right thing.  It is better to be safe than sorry.

  • I don't think you were wrong at all Sue! That's just terrible that someone would do that to an animal :(
