Crock Pot Question--do you think I'll burn the house down?

Hi Ladies,

I'm a rare poster on this board, but I'm hoping you'll have some good advice!

I'm making pork BBQ for a party tomorrow. The recipe calls for me to cook it on low for 8-10 hours and then add the sauce and cook for an additional 1-2 hours. Our party starts at 3pm, so I would have to get up in the middle of the night to start it on time. My mom suggested putting in on low about 11pm tonight, and cooking for the first 8-10 hours, than keeping it warm, and doing the last 1-2 hours right before it starts.

First do you think I will burn the house down having a crock pot going overnight? Second, do you think I will give everyone food poisoning? I'm kind of a food safety freak, so I'm probably over reacting. TIA for any advice!

Re: Crock Pot Question--do you think I'll burn the house down?

  • First, You will not burn the house down if you have it on overnight.  I usually set mine in the morning and let it simmer all day while we are both at work and no one is home, and have never had a problem.

Second, you will not give everyone food poisoning.  Slow cookers are great, and you can check at the 8-10 hour mark to make sure everything is cooked throughout, then just let is marinade for the last couple of hours.

I had BBQ chicken for our housewarming party last weekend, and everyone loved it!  I put frozen chicken in the crockpot around 9am and it was done around 4pm, fully cooked.

    Have fun!

  • Thanks for the encouragement!! I leave my crock pot all day, I was just sort of paranoid about like 10 hours overnight. I will just keep it low the whole time, and check how cooked it is before I add the sauce.

How fun--this is for our housewarming too!!!

  • You will be just fine in cooking it over night!  I have had things in the crockpot for 12  hours - I just make sure to add a little extra juice.

I hope you have a very fun housewarming party!

  • Hi!  Re: Food Safety - the temperature "danger zone" is anything above 41 degrees Fahrenheit and below 140.  I think slow cookers work at about 160 or 180/200 so you should be fine.  (I have made BBQ/Sweet and Sour things myself during the day and have turned out great - though sometimes they get liquidy...)

Best of Luck - promise you won't burn the house down or poison anyone ;)

  • Hi ladies!! Thanks for the great advice!! I did not burn the house down, and the BBQ turned out great!!! It was a little liquidy, so next time I will drain out a bit of the juice before adding the sauce, cause it was a bit runny. But I would so rather have it too juicy than too dry!!

Our housewarming was great--thanks for all the encouragement!

  • lol----you will be just fine. I usually keep my crock pot on all day with zero problems.

I understand where you are coming from though because when I first started using my crock pot I was nervous about leaving it on all day.
