Advice 4 oot chi. marathon spectator

Hello!

My husband will be running in the Chicago marathon for the first time this year.  This will be the largest race he has been involved in.  As we are coming from out of town, I would so appreciate any advice or recommendations for my husband and myself as the spectator.

Thank you,

April

  • Be prepared to get there very early. Its very crowded and parking can be hard to find if you don't know where you are going.

Also be aware of the temperature. It can be either really hot or really cold. The lake makes it feel colder especially that early in the morning but it can really heat up by noon.

make sure if you want to find him you pick designated spots to look for each other at. Certain parts of the course are more crowded than others so sometimes you might miss them running by. I think some of the McDonalds will have computers to check where he is along the course.

     HTH

  • sign up for the runner tracking on the marathon website...i've heard it's spotty so make sure he tells you what his pace will be...you can find him based on the pacers holding signs saying their finish time...the west loop is a great place to watch..it's around the halfway point..it goes down adams....i've heard spectator presence is pretty weak towards the end so you could probably find him easily down south/in pilsen...i'm running it for the first time this year and i'm making my p's buy balloons so i can find them.  HTH!!!
  • My biggest tip - know where your going to see each other and which side of the street you'll be on! The first year dh did the chicago marathon, i missed him every time due to us always being on opposite sides of the street.

State street, gets crowded, but if you get there early you can get a spot right along the curb and it's fun, since everybody is still bunched up at that point.  After that, I tend to go west toward mile 15ish or so, I cannot remember the street of the top of my head, I can get a map and look if you want. Just PM me, but there is a spot that you can go and then have to only walk a block and see them again, and they have like 2 miles to run at that point, so it gives plenty of time.  From there, I usually head toward the finish.  There are tons of opportunities to see him, if you plan it right.

Have fun!!! I spectate a ton of races in a year for my dh and this is one of my favs, but he doesn't do it every year.
