BR: skin care for moms-to-be?

Hi moms/moms-to-be! I need some advice here. I just realized that this skin product I'm using everyday has salicylic acid in it and that it should be avoided during pregnancy. I did some research online and found some maternity skin care brands: basq, edamame spa, Naturopathica, Mustela, and Beaute De Maman.

Has anyone heard of these brands? How has your skincare changed when you found out you were pg? I don't know which one I should try/get but I definitely need something other than what I'm using.

I'm also having quite a bit of breakouts recently (from the hormones?) and can't seem to find a good pg-safe products for breakouts...anyone has any advice on that either?

Re: BR: skin care for moms-to-be?

  • I used this http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=167530&catid=13107 while I was pregnant and I thought it worked wonders. I could have been a lucky one to have nice skin during pregnancy. I did have issues during the first tri though.  I also used http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=17076&catid=21228 to remove makeup before using the other one.

I hope that helps. My skin is back to is normal:-(  Not clear anymore.

  • I was opposite of Renee, my skin was a NIGHTMARE during pregnancy. Nothing really worked except giving birth, that gives you hope doesn't it?! Honestly the only thing that worked for me was 'washing' with plain water, no soap and just a clean wash cloth with warm water and then using diluted tea tree oil on a cotton ball after that. I did that at night. It helped a little but there wasn't anything else that was working. I think it was just the hormones. Days after having Bella, DH said "man your acne looks so much better"... go figure!
  • Ugh.  I'm having the same problem.  I haven't had this many zits since I was 19.  My doc says that my prescription clindamycin is fine still but it's not really helping.  So I'm just accepting that the zits are part of the whole pregnancy thing and hoping that the scars don't stay around.  If zits are the worst problem I'll have through my pregnancy, and so far they have been, then I'll take 'em.

  • You might want to check your local health food store for something that is safe for you to use. Origins is a good brand that doesn't have all the chemicals in it too.
  • I switched from Dermalogica to Clinique because in my first trimester because I was breaking out like a teenager of prom night.  But now I'm thinking of switching back to Dermalogica because my skin has dried out again.
  • Thanks for the info, girls! I'm going to try some Belli products and maybe some Origins too (I actually stopped by their counter at Macy's yesterday but wanted to do more research at home and ask on the boards too).

  • HulaLove mentioned Dermalogica ... I heart them so much.  I've been using their Skin Smoothing Cream for more than 10 years (not for oily skin).  For an oil-free moisturizer, their Active Moist is great.

I've tried to switch moisturizers in the past for cheaper ones, or even ones that are easier to get (just tried hope in a jar), but I just love the way Dermalogica makes my skin feel.

Good luck sweetie!!!  I'm so happy for you that you are preggers btw.  Prob not showing yet, huh.  I wonder if your cute pups will notice something different as you grow.

  • I had horrible skin for the past year and had been using the NuCelle line of products recommended by the aesthetician that had an office in the same building as my old Gyn.  She said it was ok during pregnancy/ttc but I stopped using it after the BFP anyways.

It worked wonders and my face was really clear prior the BFP.  Since then it hasn't be really bad, but I do get some occasional MONSTER zits and I have lots of dry spots - totally unusual for me.  I tried tea tree oil on the spots but it wasn't working that well and I didn't want to keep wasting money on other stuff so I just spot treat with the NuCelle toner if it's really bad.  If not I just let it be.

I switched to Kiss My Face facial wash b/c it was something that is sold at the local co-op (and grocery), is gentle, and gets a good rating at the cosmetic safety database
