I need a new vacuum. Do you guys have any recommendations?
Re: Vacuum cleaner help
I've got this one:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8046161&type=product&id=1158104003456
I absolutely love it! The suction is really strong no matter how full the canister is. With lots of dog and cat hair in the carpet I get down on my knees after I am done vacuuming to see how well it's picking it up and there is never any left! With my old vacuum it would always leave behind hair.
We bought this one when we moved into our duplex and it was one of the best investments we've made:
Kenmore Progressive Bagless Upright with Inteli-Clean System
I read a lot of consumer reviews and this one was recommended higher than some of the Dysons, and at the time was about $100-150 cheaper, so I was THRILLED to get it for cheaper.
Two years later, I still like it. We have A LOT of dog fur and this keeps up well. The canister is a lifesaver - we end up emptying it several times while vacuuming each room!
My parents have a Dyson and one day something got stuck in the bruches and scratched the hardwood. I'm sure that can happen with any vacuum but since the bristles are really hard on it, I'd be careful.
We have this one and I have had no problems with it:

We also have a long haired dog and it has no problem picking up hair. We don't have any carpet (besides a small area rug), so I can't comment on that.
If you decide not to go with a Dyson I suggest the one Paula posted. I've heard good things about it.
The Dyson won't ruin your hardwood floors as long as you put it on the floor setting.
The only hesitation I have about the one Paula posted is that it's a kenmore...which shouldn't cause me hesitation but that's the kind I have currently and it's been in the shop more than in my house since I got it. I realize different types of vacuums are different but it's one of those things (once the brand is bad once you don't want to use it again!).
What Dyson model do you have Kristin?
We have the DC14 model: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02035513000P?keyword=dyson
Whenever we need a new one, I want a Dyson.
