Have any of you remodeled your house?

My husband and I are still in the middle of a big home remodel.  I am wondering if any of you have remodeled and if so, what did you do and what tips you have.

Re: Have any of you remodeled your house?

  • We Remodeled our kitchen and Bathrooms. It was hell for like 2-3 months because it was little things every night. My advise would be set a schedule of when you want things done by and about how long you think they will take to complete and then set up certain times to work on it and stick with it other wise it will drag on because of procrasitination. GL!

  • we've redone flooring in both bathrooms and the kitchen, refaced cabinetry in both bathrooms and the kitchen, new kitchen and bath countertops, lighting, etc. and retiled our foyer.  Not "huge" bathroom renos, but the master bath did involve gutting, redrywalling, etc.

My advice would be- set a budget, research materials/vendors, decide what a handyguy can do vs. a professional company (e.g. our handyguy did drywall, tiling, etc but we hired a pro kitchen company for all things kitchen related.... and like a pp said, get a timeline down and write it into whatever contracts are signed. And if hourly, get a whole-project estimate (including the per-hour fee) and keep track of hours worked so you don't get overcharged.

  • We put a 2nd story addition on. The only tip I have is to get things in writing (from contractors). Especially time frames!
  • We renovated two houses so far.  Have a budget and stick to it.  It is really easy to go over by thousands of dollars when you add little things.  Make sure when you do your budget you count the small stuff like outlets and fixtures.  Every step has lots of small steps that adds anther cost. You forget things like when doing a floor it is not just the covering. You need underlayment, base boards, maybe even shoe molding, nails... Hire a pro for large plumbing and electrical things,.  Doing things to code will save you a lot of headache in the end.

  • Do you have specific projects that you are looking for tips on?  Are you doing it all yourself or hiring help?

I agree with the timeline and don't try to do too much too fast or you will get overwhelmed.

My DH likes to do the demo and making a mess part......but then takes forever to put it back together!

We have done alot....electrical, plumbing, new tile, refinish wood floors, new kitchen, bathrooms, move walls, drywall, lighting, fireplace, outside stuff......
