The Green Living Master Reading List
I would like to propose a post (hey, how about this one?) in which can all reply with the green-living books we've read, since that seems to be a hot topic every few days. Ideally, it'd be great to have it "sticky" at the top of the page, so we don't all have to hunt for it when we need something new from the library, or hope that we can find that scrap of paper on which we scribbled a few interesting titles.
So there's my proposition. Anyone care to add some material to the list? Those who want to keep it for future reference can just reply so the post saves to their My Posts page.
Re: The Green Living Master Reading List
I agree, I love having topics that continue on rather than getting splintered. That's one reason I prefer the bump method of viewing. Anyway...
I am reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and loving it! I couldn't say enough good things about it -- its an enjoyable read, inspirational, and has tons of interesting info, but without being dry at all.
That's a great idea... but I don't have any suggestions to add, without paging through past posts (which I might do anyway, just to get this rolling) so perhaps when it grows a bit I can do that.

This is a great website - top left you can choose your state and find local/organic/green farms, companies & services in your area:

This is another interesting site - I have my bookmark linked to their dairy rating study -

Raising Baby Green
Highly recommended for anyone that has children, is planning on having children or even not having children!!
Organic Housekeeping: In Which the Non-Toxic Avenger Shows You How to Improve Your Health and That of Your Family, While You Save Time, Money, and, Perhaps, Your Sanity by Ellen Sandbeck
I read this one cover-to-cover like a novel! Lots of great tips and recipes for all areas of your home.
I loved Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
(Heck, I've loved everything Kingsolver I've ever read). I've wanted to order from that cheese making place and try my hand at that ever since...
I did make vegan "cheese" over spring break... guess that's a start
Wake Up and Smell the Planet is a good one, too. It's from the people who write the grist.org site if you're familiar with that. Very un-preachy and lots of great little tips that everyone can do to help.
Gorgeously Green is OK.. some of the stuff she recommends isn't so great. It's been a while since I read it but I remember reading about JASON Sunbrellas sunscreen in there. I used that for a while b/c I thought it smelled like heaven but then I realised it's full of icky chemical sunscreens so I switched to zinc-based sunblock instead (jsut finished a tube of AquaSport that is zinc and titanium dioxide. Have to look it up on the EWG site but I thought it worked well). Makes my already fair skin look like Casper the ghost but oh well... Pasty is better than leathery!)
I have a great old book that I bought in England (at a school book fair) when I was in 7th grade
The Young Green Consumer's Guide. Wonder if you could still get that anywhere... I loved it when I was younger
There was a grown-up version, too - The Green Consumer's Guide
Yes, even as a kid I was a bit crunchy...
I'm actually starting to read some conservation books these days since that's where my education is headed. If anyone is interested, there is a huge book list here, along with tips on how to start a green book club. Under Wendy Paulson's Top Ten Green Reads on the right hand side is a link to a larger PDF list.
I love the title! I'm adding this to my list!
I have this checked out right now from the library and really like it:
Easy green living : the ultimate guide to simple, eco-friendly choices for you and your home by Ren?e Loux
Also I enjoyed the gorgeously green book and the gorgeously green diet book.
Animal,Vegetable, Miracle was pretty good too!
already requested some of the ones on this list from the library, can't wait!
I know a lot of people won't read this, but Animal Liberation had a profound effect on me. It's about factory farming and animal testing in America and how awful it is. It's not for the faint of heart, I almost threw up several times. The images of how they test detergent on baby bunnies is seared into my brain. I read the book years ago, and I can still close my eyes and see that image.
here is the orignal reading post link - you'll find my suggestions here

I've read this one too. I thought it was pretty good and the tips are pretty useful. It uses a lot of baking soda/vinegar type of recipes
this is a GREAT idea...BUT...
why don't we just create a blog? similar to what the EFF board did on the bump? OR maybe we could even ask them if they'd care if we made it a joint blog? it's seriously been such a great tool for me. a bunch of us could have it in our siggys and that way we could blog about it and blog about books etc, and just whenever someone blogs a book, label it "books" or something....
thoughts? i'll go over and ask them if there's interest over here (unless one of em reads this first hehe)
anyway here's their blog if you want to check it out: http://theecofriendlyfamily.blogspot.com/
what they do is they just add whoever wants to be a 'contributor' in the settings, and then people just blog whenever they want or have a great tip, etc.
ps - i realize this is probably going to spark the whole CD debate thing again, but please...if you look at the blog, it's not 100% about CDs..and if we joined in it would be a great mix of everything eco friendly related...there are some great ladies over there with great ideas, it would seem silly to have 2 blogs about basically the same things. although, this is all assuming there is even 1. interest for a blog and 2. they would be okay with the idea
ETA: if we did go this route, i'll volunteer to create a "book" blog and once this post gets big with lots of books, i'll put it all together and post it in the blog!

Hoping to get to Green, Greener, Greenest next.
The Tighwad Gazette is really about saving money but 99.9% of the stuff she does is green. It's a win-win.
The Encyclopedia of Country Living - not a green book per se but it explains just about anything one might attempt to DIY. I learned how to butcher a chicken from that book. And it worked. Gardening, poultry keeping, house keeping, etc. It's all in there. And it's all about using what you have and not just about shopping for the next new gadget.
I have 'the organic baby' and that book is a shopping list. It's not truly green.
Ditto this! I love this book.
I also got "It's Easy Being Green". It has a lot of items in there related to different topics and is organized so you can check off the ones you want to try. And it's printed on recycled paper.
What's in this Stuff?: The Hidden Toxins and Everyday Products - and What You Can Do About Them (Patricia Thomas)
All about chemicals w/ lots of EF tips!
Hello again!
Here are my suggestions again:
-Big Green Purse
-Wake Up and Smell the Planet
Thank you for compiling this!
Here are a few of my favorites:
The Omnivore's Dilemma
In Defense of Food
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
Cradle to Cradle: Rethinking the way things are made
Hot, Flat and Crowded
I would agree with Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and any book by Michael Pollan.
Another great book I just read is Eating Between the Lines by Kimberly Lord Stewart and The Unhealthy Truth by Robyn O'Brien
