HTC Fuze

I'm thinking of buying one off of craigslist for about $150, barely used.  It seems like such a good deal but I'm not sure if I'll like it.  Does anyone have one?  How is the Wi-fi?  Likes/dislikes?  I like to think I'm pretty tech savvy but the guy is selling it because it's "too complicated".

Thanks!!

Re: HTC Fuze

  • I've had my Fuze since Jan. of this year. It's ok. I like the touch screen and slide keyboard function, but DH hates having to use the touchscreen to dial a phone number (I quickly got used to it).

One major dislike is the sleep function for the screen. If I'm on a call, the screen goes dark (to prevent me from hitting a button with my cheek ? if I do hold the phone with my shoulder before it goes to sleep, I usually put the call on hold), and I have to 'wake it up' to push a number for an extension or to put the call on hold. You get used to it. I added the Diamond Tweak which fixed a lot of the default settings and was supposed to disable that sleep function, but no such luck for me.

The speaker is great - loud and clear. It comes with a clunky FM transmitter that you plug in (mini USB) and then you can use the speaker or headphones (only normal headphone jack is on that transmitter attachment) and plan FM radio or MP3's. I have a 1 GB microSD card in there right now and I think it's expandable up to 8 GB.

It's pretty much just like a PC - There are different ways to get to the music and you have to decide what folder to store what in, that's kind of annoying too, but again, you get used to it. Business tools are good and useful ? powerpoint, adobe, word, excel, file sync.

Often, DH tells me it's hard to hear me when I'm talking on it. He says it's kind of muffled, but I think that's only when I have the hard case on. I usually only keep the screen protector film on it and just put it in the hard case for business events.

WiFi was good. I got the Fuze because I needed Remote Desktop connection to get on to my work server, so that's why I didn't get an iPhone. Also, ATT told me it was pay per use for web ($0.01/kb), unlike the $30/month for iPhone. I removed my web package last month and they told me that I had to have a web package (cheapest $20) in order to access the internet at all (even for free wifi). I said ok, thinking they were incorrect, but no, I can't access the internet now unless I add a package. Don't like that at all, as I don't use the internet enough to make the package worth it.

Overall, I'm pretty happy for it. I wouldn't have paid $400 again for it, but $150 sounds reasonable. May want to check out ATT?s website forums for other?s opinions.

  • Thanks for the info!  It sounds like a pretty solid smartphone.  It also sounds like it may take some time getting used to all the tools and quirks but it will probably be worth it.  I also wouldn't pay $400 for it, or the $30/month for the web package, so that's why I figured getting it from a third party for $150 sounds like a good deal.  I get free wifi at work, and there's free wifi practically at every coffee shop anymore.  And I can use it at home when DH is using our laptop.
  • Glad to help!

Hopefully yours will work on wifi without the media package. Mine hasn't since I removed the package and I haven't had time to go down to the store to see if it's just some setting or if it's true, no media package=no internet, even free wifi.

  • Ouch, I'll have to look into that one before I buy it.  I would think it's some sort of setting that you have to get around because it has the wifi built in.  Luckily I know some people at the IT department at work that already said that they will help me get set up if I get a wifi phone.  Maybe you can try that at your job?
