XP: Help with 1st Bday party theme for girl

Alright Entertaining gurus, I need help.

DD is turning one next month and I'm getting into party planning mode. While I realize that kids' parties (esp ones this age) don't need a theme, I'd like to have something to work from and I am drawing a complete blank.

DD doesn't have any favorite toys/characters yet, so no Elmo/Dora/Diego parties. The party is going to be the weekend before Halloween but I don't want to combine the two days into one party.

Any ideas or suggestions?

THANKS!

  • I'm not really doing a theme, but I am making a Baby Einstein caterpillar cake- 5 rounds and cupcakes for the legs, antennae, and to smash.
  • How about a cute polka-dot party, done in pastel shades?  I bet you can get some great ideas if you google 1st birthday polka-dot party.

  • My little guy's party will be on the 31st, birthday on the 29th, and I "themed" the invitations with, "Our Lil' Pumpkin is Turning 1!".  I'm going to do fall/pumpkin decorations and balloons.  I felt like, with it being on Halloween, I had to acknowledge the season in some way.  I'm hoping to avoid having a true Halloween theme for a few years.
  • We are doing a cupcake theme for DD. What about a fall theme?

  • I think a color theme would be great - you can decorate accordingly, and dress her to match.  Bright green and pink would be cute... or the polka dots that PP mentioned, or something else cute like butterflies.

  • I was going to say a polka dot theme would be cute.  Also I've seen a bunch of cupcake invitations for kids, even ones for first birthdays.  That'd be cute!  Another idea is a ladybug theme.  You could have ladybug cupcakes!

  • DS's birthday is next month too, we're doing a luau theme.  My DH is from Hawaii and the 1st birthday is a big deal there and one of the biggest milestones, usually celebrated with a luau.

I found the cutest invites from funandsassy.com, here's the girl version: http://funandsassydesigns.com/item_1408/Luau-Fun-Girl-Photo-Birthday-Invitations.htm

I'm using three colors from the invite for decor (blue, green and orange).  I'm not going too nuts with the whole Hawaiian thing, maybe some grass skirts around the food tables.

    Good luck!
