I had a temporary moment of insanity

And registered to run the PF Chang's Rock-n-roll half marathon. I have never done this before. I ran track in high school and played college soccer for two years, but am totally out of shape.

I really wanted to do something competitive that will get me motivated to get my butt out of bed in the morning, so I went for it. I'm hoping the $75 registration fee will keep me motivated, too. Oh, and my extra "padding" around my hips and thighs.

Any marathoners out there? Words of advice on training (I do have a plan)? People in agreement that I am, in fact, insane?

Re: I had a temporary moment of insanity

  • I'm on the phone with a local psychiatric facility right now for you.

You're not insane, and you will rock n roll your way to the finish line :)

  • YAY!  You will LOVE it!  It is very addicting once you do one. I always do one long run and couple short runs/workouts throughout the week. It is extremely motivated once you are signed up to get up and get out there even when you don't feel like it.  What time did you sign up for?

  • Nope, sorry.

    You are CLEARLY certifiable. :P

  • Ya I'm with Celsius!

I totally admire your out-of-your-mind ambition though :)

  • Yeah sorry I think you're nuts, but only midly so.  When you start looking at triathalons or Ironman then I'll be concerned.

  • Good for you! I don't think you are insane :)  It takes a lot of work and you'll spend a lot of time training, but will be worth it when you cross the finish line.

I've run several marathons (my last was about 3 years ago though) and did the PF Chang's half marathon the year before last.  I actually plan on running the half again this year.

When I first started running longer distances, about seven years ago, I trained with a group.  That was nice because it is harder to skip an early morning long run, you meet some nice people and you get a lot of information and advice.  If you're not into the group thing, you can check out the Runner's World website. It has personalized training plans that you can use.  Hope this helps. :)

Erm...I don't know? Is it bad that I don't know this? I just registered online. I did see that it is a 'wave start', so I'm hoping that someone will inform me which wave I'm in closer to the date. I'm such a newb.

And to pps: Thanks for the encouragement (and from Celcius, the diagnosis, Big Smile)

  • I think you can go in under your registration number and choose an estimated time that you think you are going to finish.  Everyone gets into sections of where they think they are going to finish, so you are (sorta) on pace with everyone around you.  They also have people who run with numbers such as 2 hours 15 minutes.  They keep you on pace if you want to finish in a particular amount of time.

Eat a good breakfast before you go!  The adrenaline when you are running it is amazing. You will love it!
