slow cooker v dutch oven?
We registered for a KitchenAid slow cooker and got it (but haven't started using it yet). When we got our pots, we got a free dutch oven from BBB/Calphalon. Does anyone know if there is a difference between these (other than electronic or not)? Any tips, thoughts, comments you have on these items?
I'm not sure we can get rid of the Dutch Oven anyway, but we might be able to. I hate having clutter.
Re: slow cooker v dutch oven?
ooooohhhh, I have woman love for my dutch oven! I have both, a slow cooker and a dutch oven. I rarely use my slow cooker, its mainly for when I won't be home to tend something that needs to cook all day. I use the dutch oven probably twice a week (sometimes on the stove only, sometimes both on stove and in oven). The dutch oven is great because you can brown things in it (sear meat to keep the flavor in, or brown chicken) - I think it is much more versatile. I found that with most dishes using the slow cooker I had to brown things in a frying pan first, then I had more dishes. Also, a high quality dutch oven cooks evenly, I think more so than a slow cooker. Lastly, the slow cooker is a PITA to clean and store, in my opinion.
I think my vote is in
I have a Le Creuset Dutch oven (cast iron with enamel coating) and I love it! You can do everything in it. I use it a few times a week - it goes from stove to oven very nicely, it retains heat well.
