anyone use a Net Book?

Does anyone have a net book? how do you like it? How much do the plans cost?

I think that consumers reports did some reviews on them but I haven't had a chance to look them up yet.

Re: anyone use a Net Book?

  • I do have a net book (Dell- mine is the now-discontinued mini 9, but they have a mini 10), but I don't have a data plan/cell modem for it.  I just use it like a regular laptop and use wireless/wired networks for connectivity.  DH has his "tethered" to his Blackberry, since he has a data plan for that.

I love it for traveling!  So small and light, even though the small keyboard was hard to get used to.  I extended the machine's usefulness by getting a good-sized portable external hard drive for it.

  • I have an Asus Eee PC 900 that I got for a good deal on woot.com (so it's not through my cell phone company). Overall, I really like it. My only complaint is that the built-in wireless card doesn't pick up weak signals as well as my laptop does. But as long as I'm in good coverage, it's a non-issue.
  • Oh, I will add that mine only has 4GB of storage, so I bought a 16GB sd card to keep in the built-in slot. We have a home network where we store all of our pictures, so I don't need a lot of space on my netbook, but I was afraid 4GB would get full really quickly.
  • I just got an Acer for free and booted it up last night.

    So far, so good.

  • I have an Asus Eee PC as well and LOVE it. DH bought it at Best Buy (BIL works there, so got a good deal). I have no data / internet plan...it has WiFi, so I just use our home network, or a free WiFi connection if I'm out. It's small, lighthweight, and great to travel with!

  • I have an Acer and so far I love it. I haven't touched our PC since my husband got me the netbook a month ago. Actually, he got me the netbook so I would stay off of the PC since that is now his "gaming unit".

  • We bought a netbook a few weeks ago to have for trips and travel.  We took it on vacation and I really like it.  We were between Dell and Assus, but went with Dell and it works great.

  • I have a HP Mini.  I love it. I am on the internet all the time now.  It doesn't get hot like a notebook and it weights nothing. I don't have a wireless card for it but, I think I am going to add tethering to my Blackberry Bold. Oh, I purchased it from Frys.

  • I have a netbook, but not a data plan for it. Most of the places I would take it, like other people's houses and hotel rooms tend to already have internet. And also the couch in my living room, or sitting in bed.

I love it because I hand-picked it, a 10" Asus Eee PC running XP with built in B/G/N wireless standards. It picks up stuff my old laptop never even saw.

It's not the "newest" model, or the cheapest, but I love mine.

This one, Asus Eee PC 1000H in black.

Edit: The current version of mine is something like this:

  • I have an Asus Eee PC 901 in black.  Got it last year for my birthday.   No plan needed - just like any other laptop.  We keep it downstairs on the kitchen counter - for quick access. I also bring it on travel - it fits in my purse!   I run Linux on it.  Only downsize is the keyboard-it's small so I wouldn't want to type a long email on it or anything.

  • I looked into getting an hp, but I wound up getting a Sony Vaio.
  • We have two Dell Minis that we mackinhacked. So two Mac netbooks! Love them. Big Smile
