The baby question

Before today basically no one has asked me when I am going to have children. Literally our families haven't even. I think it's because we're 22 and people think we'll wait longer if they don't ask. Anyway....so I teach 2nd grade at a Spanish immersion school. I explained to the students I got married this summer and now I'm a se?ora. One of the kids asked in Spanish when I was going to have babies. I said they were my babies for now. Really from a 7 year old.....you don't even know how babies are made (I hope).

Re: The baby question

  • I was told that the baby thing comes up with students from Mexico more often than other students b/c in Mexico women tend to get married much younger.  I guess, culturally, they tend to get married, or at least start having babies, in their late teens/early twenties - often with a much older man who can "take care of them".  When I was working in a restaurant the Mexican cook was always teasing me b/c I was "already 23 and no babies!"  Some of my students' families were extremely shocked that I wasn't already married last year (when I was 28).  They encourage their teen daughters' relationships with men in their twenties.

I don't know if that's the case with your kids.  They could also just assume you should be further along because 22 is seriously old to a seven-year-old.  Also, kids often think the only reason people get married is to start a family.  They tend not to meet a lot of childless couples, because how often do you really hang out with your friends' kids?

  • I know kids don't understand age well. They are all mostly white kids and native English speakers.

  • Haha. That seems like a logical question in the mind of a 7 year old.  You're supposed to get married and have babies right away!
