Is it normal to feel this way?

OK, so I have my surgery on Thursday the 19th to remove a cyst from my ovary and to look for other signs of endometriosis.  The past couple days I have been getting VERY nervous.  I think the thing that is making me most nervous is the anesthesia.  I have never had surgery before and I am just so afraid I will go to sleep and not wake up.  Maybe this is crazy, but I can't shake it from my head.  I am even cleaning up my desk at work a little so if anyone needs anything while I am out they can find it easily.  And I just keep thinking that it feels so final.....that I am cleaning my desk because I won't be back.  Is this normal before surgery or am I really just overblowing the whole thing?

Re: Is it normal to feel this way?

  • I am sure it is normal, though you will DEFINITELY wake up...I know it is scary, I was the same way the time I went under, but I told myself and knew deep down I was being irrational.
  • I think deep down I know that too, but I just can't help it.....guess I like to torture myself!!
  • I have endo and I had surgery about this time last year for cysts on my ovaries and to look for signs of it in other areas.  I think it is normal to be nervous about surgery and being put under.  However, as soon as you get checked in and your changed and in the pre-op room they give you a shot of this wonderful medicine called versed, which makes you feel like you've had a few glasses of wine and you definately won't be worried.

Where are you having the surgery?  Who is your MD?

If you have any questions or just need to talk feel free to email me gallo.m@neu.edu, I remember being really freaked out about my diagnosis and worrying that I wouldn't be able to have kids etc... But once the surgery was over and all of the horrible pain was gone, I felt so much better and I'm now pg!

  • COMPLETELY!!  Back in 2003 I had a tumor and my left parathyroid removed that was possibly cancer.  I remember leaving work with my mom that morning (we worked together) and I was hugging people crying histerically because a. I was sooo nervous and b. I too had the feeling of OMG I may not see these people again.  I think it's something everyone goes through at least there first time going under.  The cocktail Mrsconti2be talks about is fantastic!! It really takes the edge off!   Good luck and I hope it all goes well!!!
  • I think its normal especially since this is your first time with anesthesia.  But, You need to stay positive and think good thoughts instead of bad!  = )  Good luck!
