new computer - how to get iTunes off old computer??

So we are going to have buy a new computer, but my iTunes library is on the old computer.  When I get the new computer how do I make sure my library from the old computer makes it to the new computer?

There might be an easier way, but I backed up my iTunes on my old computer to CDs.  When I got the new computer I just installed the backup.  Took 8 CDs but it worked great!  :-)

You can go into iTunes and click File > Library > Back Up to Disc... and use that to back up all of the files in your library.  Or you can copy your entire library over to an external hard drive.

Whatever the case, make sure you go to File > Library > Export Library...  It will export an xml file that contains all of the important data for your library like ratings and play counts and other small things that aren't contained within the files themselves.  Having that file will make sure that your library is just like it was before after you transfer to the new computer.

I just did this recently.  If you have both computers set up at the same time, you can transfer your files over your network.  I googled it and found directions.  Good luck!

You can also download a program called iDump -- it dumps all of the files from your iPod onto a computer.
