What to do about frogs....

Before I begin getting hate mail from the spca and peta.....I don't want to kill them I just want them away from my porch!

I have a frog problem with my front porch and I am dealthy afraid of them! Seriously. Its probably due to all the rain this summer. Frogs have literally invaded my porch. Big frogs, little ones theres always a few hanging out on my porch, on my beautiful cala plant and on my Fall wreath.

To make matters worse, I work early in the morning a few days a week so I leave my house at 5am which means its still dark out which means the frogs are in full pachanga mode on my porch! It takes me a good 10 minutes sometimes rattling the doorknob, kicking the door and looking through the peephole to make sure they are all gone before I make a dash for my car.

What can I do to make them go away! I dont want them to die or anything....I just want them to leave me alone. My mom mentioned salt......but I think that kills them right?

Re: What to do about frogs....

  • Jenny, I gagged just reading this. That's how grossed out by frogs I am. I always have at least 1 HUGE toad on my front porch during or after rain and I start screaming like a 2 year old. Of course, DH thinks it's hilarious to pretend like it's going to jump on me. Sorry I don't have any recommendations but I hope someone else does! I still have the heeby jeebies just thinking about it!!!
  • i dont have any advice but i just wanted to tell you i understand!!!!  when i use to live in Coral Springs i had this problem... and i hated it i would just jump over them and hope the wouldnt jump with me LOL ughhh i hated it!

have you tried googling for ways to keep them away?

  • My apologies for the frog issue; you have no idea how much I sympathize.  We had/have the same issue in our POOL!  However, I cannot disclose our method of elminating our problem, as PETA will be knocking on my door.  LOL

I've actually blogged about our problem.  We have a canal about 2 blocks away, and they hop over, and go swimming (and procreating) in our pool.  The problem has diminished over the years, but it took 4 yrs for it to settle down.  We just caught them int he pool and "got rid of them."  And if we saw some in the yard, DH would catch those too.  Hence the name "Frog Hunter."

  • Thanks for that link Justine! Unfortuantely, lol, it says there is no solution:

    • Remove the conditions that attracts them in the first place.
    • Divert them from the rest of the garden with a froggy corner.
    • Put some kind of physical barrier in place that they can't cross.

I may have to go Jackies route and just "get rid" of them. But.....My husband is just as scared of them as I am!!!!!!! LMAO. I think he would kill me if he know I was saying this in public lmao.

  • moth balls... We use them in our yard ever since Bella got sick from a toad
  • Really! Does that keep them away? I just scatter them around the front porch and plants??

  • Yep.. for us it worked like a charm
  • jenny, i don't have a solution, cause it really hasn't been a problem for us but... i just have to laugh. it's kind of cute that your DH is afraid of frogs... heehee... that's funny. my DH is not too fond of lizards, so I shoo them out of the house, while he takes care of any roaches that decide to visit...

GL!  hope you can resolve your problem :)

  • I have no idea what to tell you when it comes to getting rid of them, but I feel you on the whole icky thing. My only consolation is that they eat the bugs! I'm even more scared of bugs! Palmettos, little itty bitty ones, you name it, they gross me out. So, I just steer clear of my front door during the summer and let them hang out, it's a necessary evil. Ugh.
  • I would die if I were you and having this problem!! I hate frogs and lizards and any other reptile.  I just got freaked out reading what you wrote.

I have actually heard that the moth balls work for lizards, my friend has them all over her house because she is deathly afraid of them.  However, she says they are quite stinky.  If you are only having them outside though, maybe it won't be so bad.  She literally has them on every windowsill in her house...

What about a cat? Would a cat get them and scare them away? lol Maybe an outside kitty?? Good luck!!

  • I have heard that you can kill them/keep them away with salt (probably the coarse rock salt) Google it and see what you find.  I know it is horrible to do but i would not want those pesty things at my front door!
  • You can call PETA on me, if the salt worked, I'd do it lol.  But then do you have to get rid of all the bodies?! EW!

::gag:: That was my first thought on killing them.

I wonder if there is some kind of Crime Scene clean-up crew that would deal with frog murder.

  • If they are big I bet that they are Cane Toads, which are exotic (of course).  If so, you want to deter them as much as possible as they are highly toxic to other animals.  They can easily kill small dogs and cats who bite them.  If they are indeed cane toads, you shouldn't feel bad about killing them at all.

Sorry for the long discourse, but DH studies toxic frogs and toads for a living. If you want to deter them, you should keep the lights off (it attracts insects, their food source) and limit the amount of water.

Thanks for the info girl! Peta will have to come after me. I have an exterminator coming tommorow and I did some things with a bottle of salt. They are small frogs....some are tiny and thats what bugs me because they hop really high. There was one very large frog but I havent seen that one in a while.

Thanks for everyone's help on my frog situation! I will keep you all posted lol.
