Dare I ask? Christmas shopping?
Has anyone started? Any plans for your strategy this year? I know last year I was suuuper frugal. DH and I are*hoping* to go to Bali this year and make it easier to avoid everyone and the ruckus that comes with the gift giving season. Yeah bah humbug for real.
With the exception of a baby niece and maybe secret santas, I might just do the whole wine/baking thing again this year.
You?
Re: Dare I ask? Christmas shopping?
I don't start until the week before I am going to see the person. So, no. I haven't even thought of it.
My strategy is going to be trying to get out of buying as many gifts as possible. I hate buying gifts out of obligation. Christmas gift giving isn't fun at all to me.
Yay for not being Christian!
I save so much money this way.
Wm - what about parents, bro, Mr. and LMN? I don't remember you blogging about it, but do you not get them presents?
I want to go to Bali!!!!!!!
This year should be easy on my mom's side of the fam. We're not buying gifts - we're all pitching in on a house in Mammoth for a long weekend of skiing/boarding. That eliminates 9 gifts right there.
We do a couples exchange and draw names on my ILs side since there are so many people. We usually don't exchange names until November.
My family is so hard to shop for that I dread Christmas and birthdays. I usually scramble a few weeks before. I wish DH and I could just travel and avoid the hoopla but then my family wouldn't get that.
I started in July in getting ideas, starting to watch sales (http://www.slickdeals.net, http://www.hotdealsclub.com, http://www.fatwallet.com) - we don't have a "ton" of people to buy for but with the new baby I figured it was a good idea to get a jump start.

I'm procrastinating until school is over and I can focus on shopping. Sadly I have a large family and it's a lot but we focus on thoughtfulness more than $$.
D, If you need any rec's for Bali let me know...We went on our honeymoon there...
No presents for any adults.
Small token gift for LMN because her mom is Christian (and I guess because we'd like for her to be a "normal" kid who gets to participate in the widely celebrated holiday).
snort.
My brothers and I stopped exchanging gifts a few years ago, but we've gone in on some nice things for my parents the previous few years. Ugh, not looking forward to the holiday season at all.
Not sure about my H. We do typically spoil each other for Christmas, but I think we're going to try to be more conservative this year.
I prefer to do all my shopping on Amazon. I hate the stress of jammed malls starting in November.
It's totally true, though. Think about all the money you guys spend for Christmas, Easter, etc.
Me?
Nothing.
I was thinking about this yesterday while I was in Michael's.
I'm likely making everyone stuff- I'm in that kind of mood right now and I've gotten TONS of ideas lately.. We'll see what happens.
I have a feeling this year will be fairly frugal also.
honestly, even when we're broke, this is not something that bums me out. i love to celebrate holidays and share that with friends and family.
It sounds like people will be conservative and creative again this year!
JD if we go, I may ask you for some tips, thanks!
Am I the only one excited for the holidays? I know it can get expensive but I really love this time of year. There are lots of thrify ways to show someone you thought of them. Yes, Christmas is about Jesus but it's also about spending time with people you love. Even if you get them a bottle of their favorite shampoo or a book. I truely believe in "it's the thought that counts".
FIL and MIL are so hard to shop for so I like to start early but havent found anything for them yet. I've already purchased part of niece #2's gift still working on niece #1.
My family's easy and we dont spend as much as the ILs do on Christmas so I'm not too worried about them and between SIL & BIL we do couples gifts and we typically tell each other what we need so that helps keep it easy too.
Besides family, I dont do gifts for anyone else.
Ten years, if you have any questions for Bali, let me know. Since couple of my friends live there so they can give you good recommendation and local deals.
Haven't started Xmas shopping yet since we don't celebrate it. So only need to buy gifts for couple co-workers and friends.
yup! except we are going to Dubai this year for DBBIL wedding...so not so much money saved...
My family and friends don't exchange Christmas gifts. The only gift I will be buying is for my best friend's baby. My family celebrates Christmas but since there are no children in our family, we decided 3 years ago to just have a Christmas Eve and Christmas day dinner. No gifts. We all love it!
